Everyone wants to be the chief until it’s time to do chief things! Leadership isn’t always glamorous or easy. It means speaking up against adversity when staffing or readiness may affect firefighter or community safety.

In this case, the chief raised operational concerns in line with his duty to protect the public and his personnel. He faced consequences for doing so, though he was ultimately reinstated. Situations like this are not uncommon in the fire service.

Leaders must balance administrative realities with the operational standards required to safely serve the community. Budget discussions are real, but firefighter and citizen safety cannot be treated as negotiable.

Advocating for the resources needed to provide safe service is part of the job. When leaders do that, they should be supported, not punished. Well done to this chief for sticking up for what’s right and for his people… that’s real leadership!
