Your child gets a cut â S.C.A.N. before panicking!
Signs it will probably need closure (like stitches, staples, or glue)
- Length: > œ inch
- Depth: Does it go beyond the outer layer of skin (ie more than just an abrasion)?
- Shape: is it crooked?
- Edges: are they ragged?
- Width: does it gape open if your child moves around? I always tell parents - the width of the cut, when youâre relaxed - that will (rule of thumb) be the width of the scar. Ie: if it gapes open, your scar could be that wide. If thatâs not an acceptable size, get it checked.
- Location: we typically need stitches (or some closure) in these places:
The face (especially around eyes or mouth)
A joint (like over a knee or elbow so that the cut stretches when the leg / arm bends)
Hands
Ge***al areas
Scalp (often required to make them stop bleeding)
- Still bleeding after pressure? Typically needs some closure
Quick tip: Donât Delay: After 18-24 hours or so (depending on type of wound, location, and personâs health), the risk of an infection rises if we try to close an old wound. So, if you think thereâs a chance it will need closure, better to get it checked out sooner, rather than waiting a day and THEN coming in.
