The Nap Ministry was founded in 2016 by Tricia Hersey and is an organization that examines the liberating power of naps. We engage with the power of performance art, site-specific installations, and community organizing to install sacred spaces for the community to rest together. Our Rest is Resistance theory has been embraced all over the globe. We facilitate immersive workshops, lecture on our rest as a liberation practice, and curate performance art that examines rest as a radical tool for community healing. We believe rest is a form of resistance and name sleep deprivation as a racial and social justice issue.

2nd tenet of The Nap Ministry: Our bodies are a site of liberation.

When tap into the spiritual, psychological, metaphysical, and physical. Rest happens right where you are. We don’t have to spend money, leave our homes, leave anyone behind, have a passport, have valid ID to rest. We look to the tricksters, the escape artists and radical community care.

We Will Rest!

Every so often I gotta repost this cuz y’all think it’s a game.

The messages will keep repeating. Keep napping. Keep reclaiming your body and mind from toxic and violent capitalism.

Wow. Lectured at Sage Chapel at Cornell University during Black History Month. Moved to tears by tonight. So beautiful. Such radical hospitality. Sage Chapel is gorgeous. The people really connected. Signed so many books. Got two standing ovations. Cheeks hurt from smiling. The loveliest students. Just really grateful. 🥹😩❤️

Capitalism demands you disconnect from your body and soul in order to keep up with the unsustainable pace to creates. It also demands a level of self hate that slowly builds as you ignore the needs of your body. Turn back to love. Turn to refusal. Turn to rest. What are you refusing? Write a love letter.

At some point I’m praying y’all tap into the actual tenets of this work. Integration is necessary and it’s time.

You gotta embody it and not just talk about it. Your body is waiting for you to connect with it. Slow down. Rest now.

Our Story

The Nap Ministry is a community organization that examines the liberating power of naps. We use the power of performance art, poetry, installation, public performance interventions and community art making to illuminate the artistic, spiritual and creative power of rest. It reimagines why rest is a form of resistance and shines a light on the issue of sleep deprivation as a justice issue. It is a counter narrative to the belief that we all are not doing enough and should be doing more. We are community centered. We are focused on radical self-care. Naps are a dream space that offers us a place to invent, create and heal. When we don’t nap, we miss out on precious creative time to hope and imagine. Hope is what will sustain us. Sleep will restore us.

The Nap Ministry hosts Collective Napping Experiences that allow the community to experience a safe space that has been curated for rest.
