Thanks to a generous donor, our Le'lswa project (for her) has officially opened! Le'lswa is a combination of our Gojjo (housing), Yanetta (education) and Esther (female empowerment) projects. Our girls' house in Addis Ababa has just welcomed 4 new students! Our current young women will mentor them and create family! Send them good thoughts!

I just texted with a few of our graduates. Do you know what success looks like for our students- marrying the person of their choosing, retaining a job since graduation, having children and caring for them, returning to school for a higher degree. Multiple graduates employed. Some married, some single. Beautiful children. Program seeking for higher degrees. Check, check, check, and check.

GIVING TUESDAY PROGRAM ALERT: The Esther program is one of our newest at Making The Grade. It was developed as a response to the growing gender disparity in higher education and overall life success after several female students requested continued support. We are so pleased with this program's overwhelming success through mentorship, business and work skills classes, self-advocacy training, and family planning. We intend to grow this program, allowing more women to participate and opening chapters in new cities.
DONATE TODAY to support the Esther Project!

Our Story

Making the Grade is a charitable, youth oriented, educational and medical organization with the purpose of aiding young people obtain educational opportunities that will lead to independence and entrepreneurism. We serve students aged 7-25, with the greatest cluster in the 15-21 year old bracket. Our target country is Ethiopia.

People who are afforded a good education are then able to compete in the work force. People who then are employed can support their families. Education creates independence.

Young people under 25 make up almost two-thirds of Ethiopia’s population. Although the government of Ethiopia has increased the number of public schools, they are often understaffed, under-supplied and located hours by foot from students living in the countryside. We attempt to identify schools that meet the needs of our students and place our students in these schools. Children from poor families are not always given an early education as schools are too far from their homes and their parents are not convinced of the importance of primary education. The need is so great that many children slip through the gap -- many incredibly bright children. We are working with such students throughout the country. Our students come from extremely poor and destitute families, many of our students suffering severe deformities and medical issues. We are one of many organizations trying to help these young people become independent through receiving the educational tools to compete in the Ethiopian and world job markets.
