It's getting colder in Georgia. Did you know that working smoke alarms cut your risk of dying in a home fire by half?

The sooner a smoke alarm alerts you to a fire, the sooner you can get out. This is critical because you may only have two minutes to escape a burning home before it's too late.

If you need a smoke alarm, the Red Cross may be able to help. Visit RedCross.org for more information.

Morgan Delaney was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Ewing Sarcoma right before Thanksgiving of 2022 in her junior year at UGA. In late June of 2023, her scans came back clear but in early August, right after her 21st birthday, her scans showed that the cancer had become extremely aggressive and was everywhere in her body.

Morgan was incredibly brave and positive through all of her chemo and radiation treatments but lost her battle in September of 2023.

In memory of Morgan, the Atlanta Braves, Delta Air Lines and the Red Cross of Georgia are hosting a blood drive on Monday, Nov. 3 and Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Truist Park: 755 Battery Ave. SE, Atlanta, GA 30339.

Halloween is just days away and the Red Cross wants you to have a ghoulishly good time and stay safe.

Here are some safety tips:
1. Use face makeup instead of masks, which can make seeing difficult.
2. A parent or responsible adult should accompany young children door-to-door.
3. Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags. If possible, have everyone wear light-colored clothing. 🎃

Hundreds of American Red Cross disaster volunteers, including Steve Barden from Georgia, are in western Alaska to support the people who lost everything when their communities were devastated by Typhoon Halong.

"These families had their homes literally swept away in the deluge after the typhoon, escaping with what little they could carry on a military plane," Barden described. "The one thing they didn't lose was their families, and that's where they will find the strength to rebuild."

People are depending on the Red Cross for help, and we need your support. Help people affected by disasters big and small — whenever and wherever they occur across the country — by making a gift to Red Cross Disaster Relief at redcross.org or by calling 1- 800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767)

They may not always grab headlines but home fires are our nation's most frequent disaster.

Here are some top Red Cross tips for fire safety:

1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.

2. Test smoke alarms every month. If they’re not working, change the batteries.

3. Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.

4. If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL FOR HELP. Never go back inside for anything or anyone.
