5 TWIN PREGNANCY FACTS 👶👶

Twin pregnancies are rare and fascinating. Here are some interesting facts:

• About 1 in 250 pregnancies naturally results in twins.

• Twins can be identical (from one egg) or fraternal (from two different eggs).

• Twin pregnancies often show earlier and bigger baby bumps because the uterus expands faster.

• Moms carrying twins may experience stronger pregnancy symptoms, like fatigue and nausea.

• Twins are more likely to be born earlier than single babies, often before 37 weeks.

Twin pregnancies are special and require extra care and monitoring to keep both babies and mom healthy. 🤰👶👶💕

I definitely think we should talk a little more about side effects of the epidural. This is a good one

EPIDURAL SIDE EFFECTS DURING CHILDBIRTH 💉

An epidural is a common form of pain relief during labor. While it is generally safe, some moms may experience mild side effects.

👩‍⚕️ Common Side Effects:

• Drop in blood pressure after the epidural is given
• Shivering during labor
• Itching, especially with certain medications
• Nausea or dizziness
• Difficulty pushing because of reduced sensation
• Temporary numbness or heaviness in the legs

⚠️ Less Common Side Effects:

• Headache after delivery (spinal headache)
• Back soreness at the injection site
• Longer labor or increased chance of assisted delivery

Most side effects are temporary and manageable, and doctors closely monitor both mom and baby during labor.

Always talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks to decide what’s best for your birth plan. 👶💕

👶 FETAL STATION GUIDE

Fetal station describes how far the baby’s head has descended into the mother’s pelvis during labor. It’s measured in centimeters relative to the ischial spines (bony landmarks in the pelvis).

🔹 Station Numbers:

-5 to -1: Baby’s head is above the pelvis (early labor).

0: Baby’s head is level with the ischial spines (engaged).

+1 to +5: Baby’s head is below the ischial spines, moving toward delivery.

+5: Crowning, baby is about to be born.

💡 Tip:

Helps doctors track labor progress

Often combined with cervical dilation to monitor delivery readiness

HOW MUCH BLOOD DOES A MOM LOSE DURING CHILDBIRTH? 🩸👶

During delivery, some blood loss is normal as the baby and placenta are delivered.

🔹 Vaginal birth: About 500 mL (around 2 cups) of blood
🔹 C-section birth: About 1,000 mL (around 4 cups) of blood

Doctors and nurses carefully monitor blood loss to keep mom safe. The body is also amazing—it actually increases blood volume during pregnancy to prepare for birth.

💡 Amazing fact: During pregnancy, a mom’s blood volume increases by about 40–50% to support both mom and baby.

Every birth is unique, and medical teams are always ready to manage bleeding and keep both mom and baby safe. 💕

Infusing Passion Into Nursing Through Perinatal Potpourri

LaShea has been a perinatal nurse for 24 years and in that time has developed a wide range of skills, abilities and knowledge to empower your healthcare team. Her delivery of new information is presented in a way that captivates her audiences and leaves them wanting further development and mentoring. This company was developed because of the large amount of unit based educators; I began to mentor after they had enrolled in one of my on-site courses. I found myself in my downtime being a teacher, an advisor, a role model, a coach and a motivator to many of my past attendees. So I have developed a mentorship program that gives unit based educators or a nurse champion a comprehensive program that will provide directional guidance as they learn and adapt to the many tasks and skills they are expected to obtain as a new educator or similar role.

Our values: Perinatal Potpourri’s vision is just as the Holy Scriptures state “faith without works is dead” “ideas and thoughts without action are worthless” Helen Keller. So we value ourselves on not providing our mentees with just the knowledge of the best evidence to guide clinical practice but effective strategies to translate that into clinical practice. This program benefits the entire organization because ultimately EBP provides improvement in the quality of care and improves patient outcomes/satisfaction while decreasing healthcare costs, morbidities and mortalities.

Finally, we value providing tools to continue to invigorate and motivate bedside nurses through the programs competency and professional resources. This will ultimately keep their lights shining bright and maintain their zeal for direct patient care.
