Today in Black History we are celebrating Claudette Colvin. She is an American pioneer of the 1950s civil rights movement and a retired nurse aide. On March 2, 1955, at the age of 15, Colvin was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a crowded bus. This was 9 months before the famous incident with Rosa Parks that helped spark the Montgomery bus boycott.

Today in Black History we are celebrating Bayard Rustin. Rustin was a leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. He was an advisor to Martin Luther King, Jr., and was the main organizer for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, which helped pave the way for the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Today in Black History we are celebrating Fannie Lou Hammer. She was an American voting and women's rights activist, community organizer, and a leader in the civil rights movement. Hamer was also a co-founder of the National Women's Political Caucus, an organization created to recruit, train, and support women of all races who wish to seek election to government office. She helped and encouraged thousands of African-Americans in Mississippi to become registered voters and was known for her resilience in leading the civil rights movement for black women in Mississippi.
