Balancing multiple aspects of life, like medicine, family, personal time, exercise, and travel, is indeed a challenge, especially as women. In the past, I felt pressured to do everything by myself, fearing that asking for help would be seen as a sign of weakness. It took me some time to realize that I also matter and that taking care of myself is essential. Learning to ask for help, building a support system, and delegating tasks, such as using services like Instacart, hiring people to help clean the house, or getting assistance with laundry, have been vital steps in achieving balance and prioritizing self-care. Remember, you can achieve balance too, but you can’t do it all alone. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness!

For years, I was chasing balance — between being a mom, a wife, a doctor, and a woman with dreams.

But balance isn’t something you find. It’s something you create by choosing yourself daily.

I’m not perfect, but I’m proud of her — the woman I’ve become through grace, growth, and grit. 💫

Embarking on an emergency room visit can be daunting, but with a few proactive steps, you can navigate the experience a little bit more smoothly. It’s important to understand that while the ER can seem overwhelming, the dedicated staff is working tirelessly to provide the best care possible. With so many moving parts and the possibility of major emergencies, their attention may be required elsewhere at times. Additionally, tests and lab results take time, influencing decisions on admission or discharge. While waiting can be frustrating and anxiety-inducing, remember that the staff is doing their best to ensure every patient receives the care they need. Hope these tips help you feel more prepared during your ER visit.

Setting boundaries and focusing on your own journey may unsettle some, but it’s a powerful act of self-preservation. Don’t let others’ perceptions dim your light—embrace your authenticity and shine on.

As a hospitalist, my patients have been my greatest teachers. Through their struggles and triumphs, they’ve shown me the true essence of living. They’ve reminded me never to take life for granted, to always make time for play, and to find joy in the little things. So here I am, embracing each day with gratitude, inspired by the resilience and spirit of those I care for. Let’s journey through life together, celebrating every moment, just as my patients have taught me.

NPO orders are carefully decided based on a thorough medical assessment, taking into account various factors like the patient’s health history, ongoing medications, and current symptoms. While we genuinely want to ensure our patients receive proper nutrition, safety always comes first. As soon as we determine that it’s safe to resume eating, those NPO orders are lifted without delay. Your well-being is our priority!

If it doesn’t fit in my pocket, it’s not coming along. Being a minimalist clears the clutter and sharpens my focus. Stepping into the hospital, it’s just me and what’s essential. No excess, no distractions.
How about you? How do you streamline your routine for those demanding shifts?

I’m not saying that a happy work-life balance is not achievable, but the reality is that the challenges often intensify after graduation. Residency comes with even longer hours, greater responsibilities, and the pressure of providing direct patient care with less supervision. As an attending physician, you’ll face the complexities of managing a practice, staying updated with medical advancements, and navigating the healthcare system, all while striving to maintain a personal life. Achieving balance requires continuous effort, adaptability, and resilience.
