When someone is panicking, it can be difficult to know what to say. Be sure that your loved ones are prepared to help you by giving them the tools they need.

Think of it this way, if someone was allergic to peanuts and accidentally ate something they had a reaction to, they might pull out or gesture to their epi-pen so that their friends can help them.

If you’re feeling a panic attack coming on, have a list of questions they can ask you or phrases they can say to help calm you down. Keep this list in your wallet or saved on your phone. Things to add might include:

“I’m here for you.”

“Your fears are not silly, they are valid.”

“Take your time.”

“Let’s sort through this together.”

“There’s a cup of tea waiting for you at home.”

“This will pass.”

“I know you can’t control this.”

“I love you, no matter what.”

Although it may feel silly to expect a pre-made list of phrases to help you through a difficult time, it can be helpful to the person you're with.

Words have a lot of power, and when you’re in the middle of spiraling, it can be transformative to have someone step in and immediately challenge those thoughts and fears.

In a society that is all about ‘going’ and ‘getting things done’ and ‘time-saving,’ many of us (whether we have anxiety or not) feel bad when we are not as ‘productive’ as we feel we could be. Anxiety-sufferers often feel burdened to get over anxiety attacks as quickly as possible.

Of course, it’s not pleasant to have an anxiety or panic attack last, but sometimes you need to work through that worry.

One of the best ways to combat anxious feelings is to share that you’re feeling anxious with others.

If you’re out with friends and anxiety hits, pull one friend aside and explain that you’re feeling anxious. That way, together you can devise a plan to help you overcome your anxiety.

Depending on the situation it might be best to wait out your anxiety, or, it might be best to move to a different location where you’re more comfortable.

Panic and anxiety can strike at any time, so having a plan for dealing with that panic when it occurs is a good idea.

Prepare yourself with:

Water - sipping on good old H2O can help combat the feeling of nausea that can accompany anxiety

Headphones - depending on the individual, music or a tv show or podcast could be soothing for the person

Cash - when you’re dealing with anxiety, sometimes the best thing to do is be able to go home. If that means calling a taxi or jumping on a bus, so be it.

When you feel the panic coming on, excuse yourself to a space that you feel comfortable in. For some people, that might be somewhere small and private, like a bathroom stall. For others, it might be an open space or a balcony.

Remember, our society is more open with mental health than we ever have been before. If you’re out somewhere alone and truly feel as though you need help, don’t be afraid to call someone or ask for help from the people around you.
