šŸ’¤ Until recently, it had been a month since I had been at a birth. A month of uninterrupted sleep! It also happened to coincide with the Whole 30 nutritional reset I was doing. I was really able to spend time noticing the connection between sleep and the other seeds of self-care.

šŸ„— When I was eating well, my sleep rhythms naturally improved. When I spent more time in prayer and meditation because I wasn’t drinking because it’s not allowed on Whole 30, my stress levels reduced and my ability to be mindfully present increased, which also improved my sleep patterns. Everything is connected!

šŸ’š This week I challenge you to notice, when you say, ā€œI can’t sleep!ā€ or ā€œI slept terriblyā€, what else is going on. What other seeds of self-care are lacking that could be the real culprit for your sleepless nights? When we realize everything is connected, we can make better choices about our habits, who we associate with, and what we want our priorities to be in order to more fully Be ā€œSelf-Centeredā€.

šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļøIsn’t this a beautiful picture of me sitting on my yoga mat? A picture can be worth a thousand words, but it’s often what’s unsaid that is more in line with the truth. Like the fact that until last week, I hadn’t touched a yoga mat or pair of gym shoes in over three weeks! I’m back on track, which is why I can not only confess, but attest to the fact that;

A. We shouldn’t spend our time comparing ourselves to what we THINK other people are doing better than us.

B. We are NEVER too far gone to pick up right where we left off. All is never lost.

šŸ¤ When we have nothing to show for ourselves in the way of self care, we can look at it as a failure or a blank slate to begin anew and redefine our reality. We get to do that over and over again! Perspective is everything and it can make or break the way we treat ourselves.

āž”ļø This week I challenge you to identify where you’ve fallen short of your goals, dust yourself off and be grateful you are still here to begin again, and again if needed, and even again until we recognize that the ups and downs are normal and the very things that keep us moving forward and upward to the best version of ourselves.

šŸ’š Be ā€œSelf-Centeredā€.

šŸ· When I was in Miami a couple weeks ago, I took myself out to dinner on South Beach. If you haven’t gone to dinner by yourself, I highly recommmend it. It’s a perfect time to practice mindful eating, chewing your food slowly, which aids in digestion, savoring the flavors, while also taking in your
surroundings.

āž”ļø I sat on the patio and watched the people walk by- all kinds of people from all kinds of families and all kinds of places. As I was eating it occurred to me how I have been stuck in my tiny bubble of my small life and routines and perceived ā€œnormsā€ of day to day life. The reality is there is a whole wide world out there of people who experience life in so many different ways that are also normal for them. Basically, people watching is the best. It puts life in its proper perspective to realize that my way is not THE way.

šŸ’š This week, I challenge you to take yourself out to a HEALTHY meal. Chew your food. Be grateful for it. Take in your surroundings and appreciate all the flavors this life has to offer. Taste and see that this life is PRECIOUS AND GOOD. Be ā€œSelf-Centeredā€.

šŸ˜“ Often we are running on other peoples’ schedules and rhythms without paying any attention to the toll it takes on our bodies trying to keep up, running a race to nowhere, ignoring our own needs for the sake of everyone else- our boss, our clients, our kids, their activities, and on and on.

ā—ļøNews flash - IT ISN’T SUSTAINABLE.
If we keep this pace, we are in danger of finding ourselves face down in the way of injury or illness. We must find our own rhythms of rest FIRST and organize our activities around that as best as we can. Trust me. It can work if you work it. Knowing what you need and resolving to get it WILL make you more capable in every other area of life, and it’s what it means to BE ā€œSELF-CENTEREDā€.

šŸŽ¬ I just experienced the biggest opportunity of my long awaited acting career. An opportunity to showcase my talent, make connections with people in the industry, and get more experience under my belt and onto my resume.

ā€¼ļø But I almost didn’t. I almost said no because of this and that and I couldn’t possibly and blah blah blah. But then I realized that even chasing our dreams is no picnic. We have to make the choices that get us where we want to be instead of the ones that keep our feet safely on the ground. We have to let our mind soar to new possibilities and we have to notice when we are our own saboteur.

šŸ’š This week I challenge you to sit still and meditate on your goals and dreams and notice where you may be getting in your own way. As they say, if you ever plan on winning the lottery, you have to start by buying a ticket. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Be ā€œSelf-Centeredā€.

šŸƒā€ā™€ļøā€Does chasing around my toddler all day count? Does going up and down the stairs all day count?ā€ These are the responses I get when I ask my pregnant clients about their exercise routines. And the answer is yes!

āœ… When it comes to exercise, barely any of us are trying to win a fitness competition. It’s not about being hard core all the time. It’s about consistent behaviors strung together to create a lifestyle of movement. Cleaning counts! Walking counts! Stairs count!
Anything you do to keep your body moving is an acceptable and commendable form of exercise.

šŸ’š This week I challenge you to give yourself some credit where it is due. Getting in those steps everyday has far lasting effects mentally and physically than becoming like a chiseled statue. Consistency, not perfection is how you create the habits you want and the life you deserve.

Be ā€œSelf-Centeredā€.

āž”ļø Now that sister is off to kindergarten, the little one can explore his own creativity and sense of self. And we are enjoying one on one time together. He loves to show me how he can do things, especially cook
like daddy.

🄣 In this picture he was preparing to make soup. He sat there for so long, peeling carrots and chopping, cucumbers, and filling bowls with water. I thought about how much he was learning and I was so happy to help facilitate his experience.

When my older kids were little, I was so worried about messes that I didn’t let them explore their creativity like I should have. That is a real regret. However, when we know better, we do better – for ourselves and others. Teaching ourselves and our family the importance of proper nutrition and the role it plays in order for us to thrive in this life deserves all the attention and creativity we can muster.

šŸ’š This week I challenge you to get creative in the kitchen. Try a new dish or resolve to stop buying a specific item that doesn’t serve you. When we feel better, we do better by everyone, and it starts with properly feeding ourselves first.

Be ā€œSelf-Centeredā€.

šŸ’¤ Sleep and the life of a midwife with six kids is a challenge. For me, it’s this week’s challenge, next week’s challenge, next year’s challenge, and so on and so forth.

āž• Add that to attempting normalcy and you get a midwife on two hours of sleep going to a concert with her daughter then getting two and a half hours sleep and catching a flight to Vegas for other child’s 21st birthday. Oh but it was catching the red eye back home that did me in. As in cannot function. Must sleep.

āœˆļø I wouldn’t trade all the Vegas-ing for the world, but this behavior is unsustainable. Running on fumes, whether it’s to Vegas or work or kids’ practices or in your relationship is not being present in a way that maximizes your time or your potential.

šŸ’š So this week, let this be a reminder that we are what we repeatedly do. How are you contributing to your own health and wellness? How can you do better?

Be ā€œSelf-Centered.ā€

šŸ“š I’ve been reading Phil Jackson’s ELEVEN RINGS memoir from when he coached the Chicago Bulls and LA Lakers. He was very big on creating a tribe mentality among his teams and using mindfulness as a tool toward that end.

āž”ļø I was struck by how much we throw around that word and how it is often mistaken as something to be practiced for a certain amount of time each day rather than adopting it as a lifestyle. We practice true mindfulness when we realize that bringing our attention back to the present moment as much as possible is the real work.

šŸ’š This week, I challenge you to ask- in your job, with your partner, with your children, when you’re cleaning, when you’re driving, ā€œHow present am I?ā€, and answer the question honestly.

Be ā€œSelf-Centeredā€.

🤿 My daughter literally comes to me and asks to workout. I have a Beach Body subscription, which gives access to any workout you can think of. Her favorite is Barre Blend. She loves to do her Barre Blend Burpies, and she will actually complete a whole 30 minute workout. Why? Because she sees me do it over and over again.

āž”ļø This is your friendly reminder that whether you like it or not, you are a role model to someone- your kids, your spouse, your career. It’s kind of like if we took affirmations and made them physical. We are always affirming something. In our thoughts, words, and actions. Especially in our actions.

ā”Don’t we always tell our spouse how it’s not what they say but what they actually do that counts? Let’s not be hypocrites then.

šŸ’š This week I challenge you to think about the messages you want to send versus the messages you are actually sending. What kind of modifications need to happen?

Be real.
Be ā€œSelf-Centeredā€.
