As the first weeks of the new year draw to a close, I find myself obsessing about all the things I want to do and the changes I want to make.

And then I’m reminded about the book I recently read, Four Thousand Weeks, and how we ought to quit thinking we are ever going to accomplish everything, and how once we surrender to that fact, we will finally give ourselves the freedom to pursue our passions with deep attention and joy.

We will slow down enough to be here now instead of constantly being dissatisfied with our unattainable expectations of accomplishment, and actually accomplish more! Seems counterintuitive, but I think he may be on to something.

For example, I’m proud to share that I read 15 books this year! It started with one and the momentum grew to a new behavior that is worthy of my time, and I’m hopeful that this year I will continue to allow myself the time for being still, nourishing my mind, and being present for the things that matter most. I hope you will, too. Be “Self-Centered”!

Do you ever feel weighed down by life’s demands? Lol, just kidding. We aren’t going there. 😅

❕It’s time to remind ourselves that WE are responsible for about 95% of our perceived “weights”, like our children, for example, lol.

➡️ Whatever we consider a barrier to practicing self-care, especially exercise, we need to learn to reframe those thoughts. In fact, it’s because we have prioritized time for our physical health that our mental health is more stable and the things that “weigh us down”, including the numbers on the scale, become a little lighter. There are no shortcuts! No excuses!

🍴When I went to Las Vegas for my 30 year reunion in September, my bestie took me to the most fabulous Thai restaurant I’d ever experienced. Every dish was mouth-watering goodness. The ambiance made it even more appetizing with vibes of color and community.

💚 But what I loved best about the evening is the conversation and laughter shared between friends. Soothing to the soul and an invitation to connect with the parts of yourself you don’t allow yourself to visit often, and maybe even forgot about.

➡️ This week, leading up to the holiday hustle and bustle, give yourself permission to prioritize a shared meal with an old friend or someone you’ve been meaning to connect with. Making the time to connect with others is true self care. And you can still make good food choices!

Be “Self-Centered”!

💤 Until recently, it had been a month since I had been at a birth. A month of uninterrupted sleep! It also happened to coincide with the Whole 30 nutritional reset I was doing. I was really able to spend time noticing the connection between sleep and the other seeds of self-care.

🥗 When I was eating well, my sleep rhythms naturally improved. When I spent more time in prayer and meditation because I wasn’t drinking because it’s not allowed on Whole 30, my stress levels reduced and my ability to be mindfully present increased, which also improved my sleep patterns. Everything is connected!

💚 This week I challenge you to notice, when you say, “I can’t sleep!” or “I slept terribly”, what else is going on. What other seeds of self-care are lacking that could be the real culprit for your sleepless nights? When we realize everything is connected, we can make better choices about our habits, who we associate with, and what we want our priorities to be in order to more fully Be “Self-Centered”.

🧘‍♀️Isn’t this a beautiful picture of me sitting on my yoga mat? A picture can be worth a thousand words, but it’s often what’s unsaid that is more in line with the truth. Like the fact that until last week, I hadn’t touched a yoga mat or pair of gym shoes in over three weeks! I’m back on track, which is why I can not only confess, but attest to the fact that;

A. We shouldn’t spend our time comparing ourselves to what we THINK other people are doing better than us.

B. We are NEVER too far gone to pick up right where we left off. All is never lost.

🤍 When we have nothing to show for ourselves in the way of self care, we can look at it as a failure or a blank slate to begin anew and redefine our reality. We get to do that over and over again! Perspective is everything and it can make or break the way we treat ourselves.

➡️ This week I challenge you to identify where you’ve fallen short of your goals, dust yourself off and be grateful you are still here to begin again, and again if needed, and even again until we recognize that the ups and downs are normal and the very things that keep us moving forward and upward to the best version of ourselves.

💚 Be “Self-Centered”.

🍷 When I was in Miami a couple weeks ago, I took myself out to dinner on South Beach. If you haven’t gone to dinner by yourself, I highly recommmend it. It’s a perfect time to practice mindful eating, chewing your food slowly, which aids in digestion, savoring the flavors, while also taking in your
surroundings.

➡️ I sat on the patio and watched the people walk by- all kinds of people from all kinds of families and all kinds of places. As I was eating it occurred to me how I have been stuck in my tiny bubble of my small life and routines and perceived “norms” of day to day life. The reality is there is a whole wide world out there of people who experience life in so many different ways that are also normal for them. Basically, people watching is the best. It puts life in its proper perspective to realize that my way is not THE way.

💚 This week, I challenge you to take yourself out to a HEALTHY meal. Chew your food. Be grateful for it. Take in your surroundings and appreciate all the flavors this life has to offer. Taste and see that this life is PRECIOUS AND GOOD. Be “Self-Centered”.

😓 Often we are running on other peoples’ schedules and rhythms without paying any attention to the toll it takes on our bodies trying to keep up, running a race to nowhere, ignoring our own needs for the sake of everyone else- our boss, our clients, our kids, their activities, and on and on.

❗️News flash - IT ISN’T SUSTAINABLE.
If we keep this pace, we are in danger of finding ourselves face down in the way of injury or illness. We must find our own rhythms of rest FIRST and organize our activities around that as best as we can. Trust me. It can work if you work it. Knowing what you need and resolving to get it WILL make you more capable in every other area of life, and it’s what it means to BE “SELF-CENTERED”.

🎬 I just experienced the biggest opportunity of my long awaited acting career. An opportunity to showcase my talent, make connections with people in the industry, and get more experience under my belt and onto my resume.

‼️ But I almost didn’t. I almost said no because of this and that and I couldn’t possibly and blah blah blah. But then I realized that even chasing our dreams is no picnic. We have to make the choices that get us where we want to be instead of the ones that keep our feet safely on the ground. We have to let our mind soar to new possibilities and we have to notice when we are our own saboteur.

💚 This week I challenge you to sit still and meditate on your goals and dreams and notice where you may be getting in your own way. As they say, if you ever plan on winning the lottery, you have to start by buying a ticket. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Be “Self-Centered”.

🏃‍♀️”Does chasing around my toddler all day count? Does going up and down the stairs all day count?” These are the responses I get when I ask my pregnant clients about their exercise routines. And the answer is yes!

✅ When it comes to exercise, barely any of us are trying to win a fitness competition. It’s not about being hard core all the time. It’s about consistent behaviors strung together to create a lifestyle of movement. Cleaning counts! Walking counts! Stairs count!
Anything you do to keep your body moving is an acceptable and commendable form of exercise.

💚 This week I challenge you to give yourself some credit where it is due. Getting in those steps everyday has far lasting effects mentally and physically than becoming like a chiseled statue. Consistency, not perfection is how you create the habits you want and the life you deserve.
