Committing to a lifetime of medication isn't a desired outcome for many, myself included. Many of the symptoms one experiences after traumatic brain injury present as psychiatric symptoms, but are coming from neuroinflammation and are not resolved with medication alone. Medication is a useful tool to manage symptoms, but the ultimate goal should be addressing the reason why those symptoms presented in the first place.
In this interview clip with Dr. Mark Gordon, he talks about the importance of addressing the underlying issue of symptoms and that, in doing so, he has helped people return to wellness enough that they could start coming off of medication. Many of these medications are usually prescribed indefinitely, or at least they were for me. I am now on a lot fewer prescriptions, and it's due to this concept. There's a better way to treat traumatic brain injury.
