At our Sweet 16 event on 11/2/25, CJ proudly honored our Golden Apple Awardees - individuals who’ve gone above and beyond and remind us what it means to serve with heart. 🍎 Through their leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment to food equity, they’ve helped our mission grow and thrive. Today we focus on Fantasia Williams (), a proud Georgia native from Valdosta and an alumna of the University of Georgia. She made Atlanta her home in 2016. Although she grew up in the South, Fantasia knew little about foraging or farming before connecting with Concrete Jungle at the start of the pandemic. What drew her in was not just the food, but the organization’s deep commitment to community and connection.

After just a few volunteer shifts, Fantasia quickly became a leader, co-managing the Decatur Depot grocery delivery program alongside Nduka until its close. Her dedication to the mission led her to join the Concrete Jungle Board, where she has chaired the Community Engagement Committee and guided the effort to refresh the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

While she has learned much about food systems and foraging during her time with Concrete Jungle, Fantasia says her greatest lesson has been discovering the strength and power of community—something she’s witnessed every Saturday in the smiles, stories, and camaraderie of volunteers at the Decatur Depot.

It’s the 16th of the month, which means it’s Sweet 16 Story time! 🎉 Today we’re celebrating how our Produce Buyers Club (PBC) went from a COVID crisis response to one of the most impactful programs at Concrete Jungle.

During the pandemic, our grocery deliveries caught the attention of CARE USA, who asked us to help source produce for 150,000+ CARE packages. That request led us to discover how much “imperfect” but perfectly good produce farmers had to throw away each year.

So we teamed up with partners to form a buyers collective—and moved 257,160 lbs of rescued produce in just 18 months. When the collective ended, we turned it into our own Produce Buyers Club.

Fast forward to today: thanks to key investments and an expanded farmer network, PBC has distributed over 1 million+ pounds of produce so far in 2025—a 35x increase from before PBC began. 🙌

PBC is fighting food waste and food insecurity at a time when families need it most.

Today we honor Robby Astrove, an environmental educator and ecologist serving as the Preserve Manager for the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve. For over 20 years Robby has acted as an educator, land steward, and community organizer on behalf of biodiversity, native plants, fruit trees, urban agriculture, and all things foraging. In 2009 Robby began planting fruit trees and orchards at schools, parks, and community gardens in urban Atlanta with and without permission as a long-term solution to increase food access in food deserts. Introduced to Concrete Jungle in 2009, Robby has supported and contributed towards CJ’s mission and programs, tree mapping efforts, Doghead Farms plantings, and the overall culture of having fun with purpose.

On Veteran’s Day, it feels right to recognize our Golden Apple Award Winner, Trudy Willis. Trudy is a 4th generation Atlantan and a veteran of the United States Air Force. She followed her aunt and mother into the “feeding the community business” in 2004 and is proud to still be actively involved in the feeding the community business today. She originally met the Concrete Jungle team when she was involved with SWEEAC, an Atlanta-based nonprofit founded in 1998 that served 5000 people a month through their food pantry before closing in 2023. She remains very connected to CJ through her involvement with New Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Mimi is a passionate champion of food justice and urban agriculture in Atlanta. As a founding board member and our 2020–2022 Board President, she helped guide Concrete Jungle through critical growth. Mimi’s belief that healthy food is a right—not a privilege—has shaped her community involvement.

Mimi is currently the Sr Agile Produce Lead for Intercontinental Hotel Group. She earned her MBA from Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business where she met with Concrete Jungle’s founders and has stayed involved involved since. Mimi now serves on the board of Jewish Family & Career Services. She lives intown Atlanta with her husband Russell Gottschalk, their son Irving, and their dog, Berry.

Newsweek has called it “the greatest hunger crisis since the great depression.” This suffering is being felt by neighbors all around us: postal workers, teachers, and parents working several jobs. We see it every day as we deliver fresh produce to hunger relief partners who are facing empty shelves and longer lines.

One of our partners described the lack of food this way: “We used to be able to provide meats to people, but that’s all but gone away. Now, we have to give people Pop Tarts, cake mixes, frosting and cereal boxes.”
