One of the biggest obstacles to stay connected and calm in our parenting is the unresolved hurt we carry with us from childhood. Particularly the stories we haven’t examined and worked through.

Old habits of mind can be resistant to change, but you can outwit them.

Most Norfolk schools and preschools start this week and, while it's normal for parents to want to share special moments, it's good to just take a second to think about whether you want your child’s pictures or personal information getting into the wrong hands? 😟

Once an image is on the internet it’s almost impossible for you to control who sees it and what they do with it. If you do decide to share pictures and information about your child online here are some things you can do to minimise risk:

📸 Share your images with individuals you trust via private message rather than on your social media profile. If you do share to your profile make sure it is set to private and that you know and trust all your friends or followers.

⚠️ Don't include anything in the image that could identify where your child goes to school or where they live. Examples include clothing with the name of your child’s school or preschool, your front door, or landmarks in the background that give away your location. You can use the edit function on your phone to scribble over the sensitive information or edit the photo on social media just before you post.

📍 Be mindful that regularly tagging your location, or even just leaving on your GPS when taking photos which you later share, could give away to strangers your family routine.

📛 Don’t use your child’s real name when referring to them online.

🗣️ The only way to really control who can access pictures of your family, or find out information about you and your children, is to never post it online. If you make this decision for your family, don’t be afraid to let your nearest and dearest know and challenge anyone that posts photos of your child without your permission.

The images of the violence that took place in our nation’s capital were deeply disturbing and once again, placed us parents in the undesirable position of having to engage in really tough conversations with our kids.
