I gently run my fingers through her matted blonde hair and sigh. I then look at the toast with small nibbles all around it, considering it a win for now. I block out Bluey playing on repeat in my room (as it has been for the last 24 hours), and do my best to ignore the bowl at her side, the infamous bowl, so that I can focus on answering some emails. I’m so eager to clean. To clean her up, to clean this room, and to be productive.

The weekend didn’t go to plan. My mental list of “to-do’s” was barely touched. My eyes burn from the lack of sleep, which is unfortunate that I wasn’t able to be productive OR rest. This type of weekend reminds me of what’s important and what really, truly is not. And what’s really not that important is: me.

That may sound depressing and even self deprecating, but I’ve found it is freedom. And in that freedom I have space to enjoy every glimmer. In every crummy weekend (or season of life for that matter) there are always glimmers.

When I was in training to become a therapist, a tool I learned was to have clients take photos of their “glimmers”...
