There may be lots of time that go by in between posting here as I prepare Willow for her eventual pet therapy training. She has started puppy class but due to the overwhelming distractions of 13 puppies in the class it's hard to really do anything while we're there. So we tend to do most of our training at home.
She is doing very well with the basic obedience commands of sit, stay, down and we are working on walking on a leash. She is learning "place" but that is slow going.
I hate to say it but I don't think she's as bright as Hamlet was, but maybe that's just because she's still a baby.
She definitely does have the demeanor to be a therapy dog and even more so, as an emotional support animal. She will be trained as far as I can take her.
The trainer in her class gave me a prong collar to help control her since she gets so distracted by so many of the other puppies, but I really don't care for it. I'm sure that's just me talking and it's probably fine for the dog. Maybe I will get used to using it as she will be a big girl and I will need to find a way to keep her from pulling my arm out of its socket. π
I think, overall, Hamlet would approve. I am doing more for her training-wise than I was able to do for him. He started training to be a therapy dog late in his life, though he did have basic training early on, we did not continue until many years later. In-between, he was just my buddy. But since Willow will be as big, if not bigger, than he was and I'm a lot older, she needs to have the training in order for me to control her activities outside and when we are around other people and pets. So far, she is a love to everyone and seems to love all the dogs that she has come upon.
Here she is in her first class. Tonight will be her third.
