So I am attempting something new! Each week I plan to post a patient/client case to provide education about different conditions, explain what treatment might look like, and hopefully increase physical therapy and pelvic health awareness. So, here we go!
Patient presented to session today with primary complaint of low back pain for 3 days. Pain has been constant but worse with bending forward and back.
Likely cause: A few days ago -nursing her baby in a bit of a funky position (which we have all done!). She reported increased pain and decreased range of motion with trunk flexion and extension.(L side greater than R).
PT performed Mulligan manual therapy SNAGS at central and L side lumbar spine- mobilizing the facet joints of the vertebrae while patient moved into trunk flexion and extension. After performing several repetitions at the "right spot" that relieved symptoms, she reported complete resolution- no pain in back and improved mobility. She was directed in a self mobilization/exercise to continue at home.
We then proceeded to address mid back stiffness with specific exercises to promote extension of the thoracic spine and stretch out all those tissues that stay tight when nursing/pumping. She was also directed in strengthening of mid/lower traps to help stabilize the scapula. Exercises that followed aimed to improve rib cage mobility, pelvic mobility, and diaphragmatic breathing.
We are also addressing pelvic pain, urinary leakage, and bladder urgency. Bladder diary sent home- will hopefully provide some valuable information to tackle at next session.
Pelvic health is so much more than "just kegels"!!!!
