Looking forward to hosting the next Getting Ready For Baby class on July 20 from 5:30-6:30 at the Hampshire County Library. We will talk about what to pack in your hospital bag. Our discussion will cover more than just packing your robe and slippers.

We will dive deep into what you can pack to keep yourself comfortable in labor. Things that Pinterest and your mom didn't think to tell you about.

I look forward to seeing you there!

How to deal with the pain of labor is a popular question that I get all the time. The truth is there are many techniques you can use. The tips I have listed here are:

1. Use upright positions: Upright positions help your baby descend into your pelvis. Upright positions would include walking, slow dancing, sitting on a birth ball, or standing in the shower just to name a few.

2. Use hot or cold packs on the pain. Before using a hot or cold pack make sure you have something between mom's skin and the pack. Using a cover or a towel will suffice. Also, only use the packs on locations that are not numb. For example, if mom has an epidural then a hot or cold pack should only be used on her upper body.

3. Have all the support you want. Being able to choose your support will make a big difference in your mental state going into labor. Make sure your support will actually be helpful and not a burden as labor progresses.

Have a doula. A doula can provide you with continuous labor support which has been shown to possibly shorten your labor and create a greater satisfaction with your birth. You are also less likely to have a Cesarean birth.

What helped you during labor?
