We are proud to spotlight Dr. Greg Gremmel. Raised in a small South Texas town after being born in Guam, Dr. Gremmel’s roots in rural life helped shape his passion for community-focused emergency care.

After earning his degree from Angelo State University and completing medical school at the University of Texas Health and Science Center in San Antonio, he trained across the country before completing his emergency medicine residency in Jacksonville, Florida.

Since joining VEA/VHA in 2022 at our Yoakum site, Dr. Gremmel’s leadership and clinical expertise have made a lasting impact. In 2023, he stepped into the role of Emergency Medical Director, continuing to elevate the care we provide.

Outside the ER, he enjoys life outdoors with his family in Shiner, caring for bees, pecan trees, and passing on his love of the outdoors to his children.

Clinician Spotlight: Dr. Joseph McDaniel

We are proud to spotlight another talented and experienced VEA leader this month; Dr. Joseph McDaniel, ER Medical Director at Connally Memorial Medical Center (CMMC), where he has cared for the Floresville community for the past five years.

Before medicine, Dr. McDaniel, known to many as “Mac”, served as a United States Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and later in the United States Air Force, deploying multiple times to combat zones after completing his Emergency Medicine residency. His career of service also includes the United States Navy Reserve and the Air National Guard Reserve, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

In addition to his role at CMMC, he serves as VEA’s EMS Liaison and as Medical Director for Bexar County District 7.

Dr. McDaniel is an outstanding member of our VEA team. Thank you for your dedication to our patients, our community, and our country.

Clinician Spotlight: Fausto Saa, NP.

Physician Extenders are an essential asset of VEA’s Team. Today we spotlight Fausto Saa, NP. Fausto’s journey of service began early when he joined the U.S. Army at 17, serving for three years. During his time in the military, he witnessed history firsthand in Germany during the fall of the Berlin Wall and later served in Operation Desert Storm.

After completing his military service, Fausto found his calling in emergency medicine, spending 15 years as an ER nurse and excelling in high-pressure environments. Always driven to grow and take on new challenges, he returned to school and graduated from Texas Tech in 2010 as a Nurse Practitioner.

A tireless and dedicated member of the VEA family since 2017, Fausto’s compassion, clinical expertise, and strong leadership have made him an invaluable part of our team.

Fausto, your hard work, compassion, and leadership make a difference every day. Thank you for everything you do to make our ER and VEA a better place.

We are honored to spotlight Dr. Gil Arbelaez, Medical Director at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. Dr. Arbelaez began working with VEA in 2016 and joined full time in 2017, later moving to Uvalde where he has led the emergency department for the past three years.

Dr. Arbelaez is widely respected by his colleagues and patients for his kindness, clinical skill, and steady leadership. On May 24, 2022, he was on duty during the tragic events in Uvalde. Under his leadership, patients who arrived alive to the emergency department received exceptional care during an unimaginable day.

In 2023, Dr. Arbelaez was awarded an honorary PhD from Hobart and William Smith College in recognition of his actions and service.

Thank you, Dr. Arbelaez, for your continued dedication to the Uvalde community and to VEA.

We are proud to spotlight Dr. Nafeesa Salam, a full time hospitalist at Matagorda Regional Medical Center in Bay City and Medical Director for our hospitalist service.

Dr. Salam was recently recognized by MRMC for exceptional patient satisfaction, becoming the first physician in the hospital’s history to receive perfect scores from eight patients she treated during their hospital stays.
