Beaujolais Nouveau is old news when it comes to this French wine region located in the southernmost part of Burgundy. Here you'll find the Gamay grape at its finest: part-time rustic champion of the Thanksgiving dinner table, and part-time underdog of the lighter-bodied wine world. As the seasons slowly transform into Autumn (and red drinking weather arrives), returning sommelier Ashley will be here to break down the nuances of this often over-looked wine region. Most of us are familiar with grapes like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and even Gamay... but did you know there are around 10,000 different wine grape varieties in the world? We will explore just a tiny fraction of these lesser known varieties, focusing on those that are more widely available and may even be hiding in plain sight. Grab your favorite bottle made from an offbeat grape variety, or even take a chance on a grape you have literally never heard of before and we will talk about where these grapes are cultivated, what to expect from some of these bottles, and just begin to scratch the surface of the world of wine grapes. If you've been hesitant to drink Texan wines made from Texas grapes, this bottle will singularly change your mind. Meet the 2019 Grower Project Albariño! Cultivated by the Hogue Family, the grapes helm from the Black Water Draw Vineyard in the Texas High Plains AVA. It was fermented using stainless steel vats and at 12.8% ABV, this wine drinks with unsparing expression:
🔹
Flavor: Honeysuckle, Jasmine, Tart Lemon Citrus, Green Melon, Salinity
🔹
Texture: Citrus Oils, Bright, Crisp & Lasting. (Minerality is the backbone to this well-postured bottle-- it even had me sitting up a little straighter in my seat.)
🔹
If the taste alone of this 100% Texan wine won't win you over (and we recently hosted a class with over 20 people who can confirm that it did), this brand has a number of inspiring initiatives to positively transform our community. Specifically, works with all of their farmers to establish sustainable practices as they maintain "Know the land. Respect the hands."
🔹
In addition to low impact farming, they've mindfully made it a priority to include labor in their definition of sustainability. Winemaker spoke with us briefly about one of their ventures: "One of the central goals of The Grower Project will be starting a healthcare fund for farm workers this year. We've been building the production & its visibility to enlist other producers to contribute to a central fund that would address a lack of accessible health care for many of the wine industry farm workers around the state."
🔹
White wine not your mood? The Grower Project also produces a Rosato, 'The Source' Sangiovese, and a Carbonic Petite Syrah! Now get out there and snag yourself a bottle 🌵

Classes for a Cause

The Stay-at-Home Somm is a community-driven project intent on bringing sommelier experiences directly to your home during quarantine. We offer themed, curated online wine classes taught by recently displaced sommeliers and wine professionals in Austin. Our team of wine teachers have created classes specific to their specialties and passions. This is your chance, while you’re safe at home, to learn from and interact with some of the brightest wine minds in our city while supporting the service industry.

This project encourages maintaining and rebuilding our hospitality community during Covid. We support small Austin retailers, restaurants, and Texas wineries. Classes are reserved through a $25 tip donation via our website, and go directly to newly unemployed wine professionals or relevant nonprofits.

We hope to see you online soon!
