Trimology was created to address what the creators believe to be yet another underlying cause of unexplained weight gain: metabolic inflexibility. A metabolically flexible state, as defined by a team of researchers in a 2022 review, is one in which the metabolism alternates between glucose and fatty acids (i.e., fuel sources) during feeding and fasting states. Having such fuel options is thought to lower hyperglycemia (or high blood sugar) after a meal while also ensuring a healthy source of glucose for the brain.

According to the researchers, the key to reversing metabolic inflexibility is to ease the strain of ROS buildup produced by carbon overload in the mitochondria while decongesting it completely. Exercise (for insulin action), intermittent fasting (introducing energy restriction to help with cellular transition), sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (prescription medication for lowering blood sugar), cold exposure, and hypobaric hypoxia (proportion of oxygen availability) are some recommendations made thus far.
Another study [1] examining metabolic inflexibility found that insulin resistance (or our cells’, tissues’, and organs’ inability to respond to the insulin hormone) was a significant component. In particular, whether present in the muscle or not, insulin resistance purportedly affects mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and causes an excess buildup of lipid metabolites. Ultimately, insulin resistance and metabolic inflexibility will increase one’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Above all, it hinders the body from fully utilizing fat stores, potentially leading to weight gain and obesity.
