Cancer Nutrition HQ Empowering cancer patients and survivors with evidence-based nutrition I enjoy wearing many hats as a clinician, educator, scientist, and science communicator.
(1)

I have over 14 years of experience in nutrition and cancer, including research, higher education, and clinical practice. Education, empowerment, and empathy are at the core of my work. Through my experience, I have seen the critical gap in nutrition support for cancer survivors both during and after cancer treatment. Finding quality nutrition information is increasingly difficult with the rise of misinformation and disinformation. Rather than stand back and watch the problem worsen, I strive to combat misinformation, share the latest research in nutrition and cancer, and translate the science into everyday actions survivors can take to support their health and quality of life with nutrition. I am committed to building Cancer Nutrition HQ to be a hub of evidence-based resources and tools for patients, survivors, caregivers, and healthcare providers. When I am not blabbing about nutrition to anyone who’ll listen, I enjoy weightlifting, traveling, trying new restaurants, and spending time with my husband and two pups in Austin, TX.

There is good stuff in there that does align with the evidence. Great - I’m for it. But not all of it aligns and kind of contradicts. It does still stay to limit saturated fat but goes on to recommend full fat dairy, red meat, and give the ok for butter and tallow - all foods high in saturated fat.

If my response seems overly emotional, it’s because I do care. I care deeply about scientific integrity and public health.

So this is my real, unedited response after reading them in the parking lot

You know you need to drink water but feeling full, nauseated, or just hating the taste of water can make it challenging to meet your needs.

Something that used to come naturally before cancer may now require more intention and effort.

Meeting fluid needs is critical and there are no hacks other than an IV, which is not a long term solution. There's no supplement that can replace the functions of water, so keep doing your best to drink up.

With the start of summer, it's a good time to mention how popsicles can be a strategy to pack in more nutrition during and after cancer. They are essentially frozen smoothies that you can put pretty much anything in to, so get creative!

Popsicles can be a helpful tool when dealing with some side effects of treatment or just a way to enjoy a refreshing treat.

Stay cool friends!

It's National Smoothie Day, a great day to celebrate how these can be an easy way to pack in lots of nutrition without having to cook!

I commonly see people using blended fruit in a low protein liquid as a meal. A smoothie can be made up of anything, but I recommend building one like you would a meal - balanced with macronutrients and heavy on the plants.

If you need to pack in more calories - can add in more healthy fats like nut butters and avocado.

Hope these tips help you build a smoothie you'll love. The possibilities are endless!

Comment or DM me the word "Smoothie" and I'll send you a link to a collection of 10 yummy smoothie recipes.

Dietary changes can help reduce the severity of diarrhea.

Reduce irritants that can worsen symptoms

Replenish fluid and electrolyte losses

Continue nourishing yourself to give your body, including the gut, the nutrition it needs to heal and recover.

As always - let your care team know when you have diarrhea so they can help! It’s a side effect they need to know about, so don’t downplay it.

Share any tips you have for managing diarrhea in the comments!

Probably more than you wanted to know about diarrhea, but here it is anyway!

I think a better understanding of why and how it happens will help in understanding that there isn’t a one size fits all approach in strategies to treat it.

Also, it’s more important than people realize. Uncontrolled diarrhea can impact treatment adherence and a patient’s nutritional status.

So don’t just suffer through it. Talk to your care team. It may not ever get back to “normal” but there are ways to reduce severity and replenish fluid and electrolyte losses.
