Wasn’t the point of all this so you can feel better?

Feeling paralyzed about eating “the right” foods on the weekend is about as far away from that goal as we can get.

You should never feel bad about what you ate and you should never feel bad about yourself because of the choices you made.

But here we are, somewhere on the path to good intentions we stumbled into the hellscape.

The good news is, we can get back on the right path.

Hopefully this post can help you with that.

If you’re trying to lose weight/fat, then all diets work.

This is a fact.

They work because they’re able to change your behavior.

In this case that behavior is eating too many calories. And every single diet has a structure or mechanism that helps you eat less.

They are functionally the same.

Because of the behavior change, losing weight can be both really easy AND incredibly hard.

Making the initial change, while uncomfortable, is pretty straightforward. Keeping that change is what’s truly hard.

For long term success, you need to be aware of that. When you’re starting a new diet you need to ask yourself if it’s something you can do for a long time.

Usually, it’s not.

That’s why most people who lose weight gain it all back.

And it’s why I focus on making the behavior change as simple as possible with my clients. The specific strategy we use changes a lot from client to client.

But the foundational behavior change is always the same. Here are some examples:

- setting a protein and calorie goal
- Using smaller bowls/plates
- Replacing half of their carbs with vegetables
- Intermittent fasting

And many more.

The point is to provide structure and support for the behavior change.

From there, it just gets easy.

Have you ever felt stuck?

You’re directionless. Not really sure what’s wrong but you know you need a change.

But, making a change when you’re not sure what’s to do is impossible.

You feel trapped, and it makes everything around you just feel worse.

Luke Skywalker felt that way. Bilbo Baggins felt that way too.

They all needed a push, an excuse, a reason to take action and someone to guide them through it.

This is your push. (With less world altering danger, thankfully)

Most people say you need to have a specific goal to reach when you’re starting your fitness adventure.

I disagree.

In fact I believe the more specific your goal, the more likely you are to fail.

It’s like creating a D&D character with an elaborate backstory.

It looks really cool and it feels exciting to have your whole past mapped out.

But, that backstory is a trap. You have no idea what will happen in a campaign and it boxes your character in.

It’s like wanting to lose “I want to lose 10 pounds in the first 3 months”

It’s specific and seems achievable.

And that is when you run into trouble.

Because what happens if you only lose 5 lbs?

It still feels like a failure because you’re locked into that goal.

It doesn’t matter that you’re stronger and fit in clothes you thought you’d never wear again, all you see is that you didn’t hit your goal.

That sucks because now that goal is limiting you. Just like an elaborate back story will do.

The reality is, that goal is arbitrary.

That goal is really, a feeling.

And thats what you’re chasing.

Once you know that, you can stop chasing s**t that doesn’t matter.

This is one of the first things I help my clients identify before we head out on our fitness adventure. It’s the most important part.

Since I knew what stars were, I’ve always been absolutely fascinated by them.

Not just by how beautiful they are but what they represent and how absolutely small they make me feel.

For me, this is important because it’s so easy for me to get lost in my own bulls**t.

When you’re “in it” it’s hard to escape. It can feel impossible.

But for me, taking a look up can be all I need to get a grip and remind myself that none of this matters, like at all.

And knowing that, I get to choose what matters to me. I control that. I decide what I care about and where I spend my energy.

So much of what “sucks” right now will be less than a footnote in your life.

Spend your energy where it matters to you and do not give a f**k about anything else.

Do that and I promise you will have lived a meaningful life.

If you don’t control what you care about you can’t control your life.

Stop reacting to everything.

Be true to yourself. Know what truly affects you and dedicate yourself to that.

It is literally the only way to maximize your life.

Own it. Care deeply about the FEW things you should.

The rest can completely f**k off.

It’s the ultimate version of saying “no” and it might just save your life.

What is one thing that you truly care about?
