Dear Julio,

Another year of this wild ride. I never feel I have all the right words or even new ones but, here are some, for you.

I know the days are long for you, especially. I see you building a dream for us all with your bare hands and your whole heart. So many don’t see the depth of your work and sacrifice, but I do.

I watch you toss and tickle and wrestle the little joys of our life, with tired eyes and a happy laugh. They may not remember the days you stopped in the middle of everything to admire a dress or be a dinosaur or, notice all the ways you shape their lives with love, but I do.

I love looking through pictures of you when you were younger, and that you keep photographs in boxes under the bed, like precious pieces of your life. I wish I knew you then, too. Some may never know the sentiment and love you carry with you, but I do.

I close my eyes and see us someday, when all the time has passed. We’ll still sit on the same side of the table in restaurants and you’ll still hold my hand. Nobody else may dream of an older version of us, but I do.

I’ve had you 17 birthdays now, and I want all the rest. To me, life starts and ends with your smile. If ever I were to be asked if I’ve known the good life, I’ll pause and remember the first time I said “I do.”
