Mary got a kidney Mary has Polycystic Kidney Disease and was dialysis for over a year. On September 14, 2017 Mary got a kidney after being on the transplant list for only a week!

This page shares her story & will be her fundraising page to help pay medical bills. As many of you know my mother, Mary Mathis, has been struggling with kidney failure for little over a year now. She has Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and has been on peritoneal dialysis for over a year now. We finally got everything approved and she is now on the transplant list for a new kidney! Our last task (before getting the call), is to fundraise like nobody's business! Right now my mom still works part time, but that will change once she receives a kidney. She will forever be immunocompromised and cannot stay at a job that requires her to be in crowds of people. She will also have an increase in financial needs after transplant due to the high costs of anti rejection drugs. She will be on these for the rest of her life. Because of this, the transplant center requires us to fundraise as a qualification to be on the list. Our goal is to raise $25,000. The trickier thing is that we don't know how long we'll have to raise that. She could get the call in 3 months or 3 years. This page is meant to spread the word about my mom's situation. I want our friends and family to be in the loop, and if willing, help in any way. Whether that be through donations, volunteering to help fundraise or give emotional support. Donations can be monetary (please see link on this page to her fundraising website), it can be in the form of goods (either to Mary or items to be used in bake sales, auctions, etc.), OR a kidney (Seriously! Living donors do not bear any financial cost). Unfortunately, because this is a genetic disease, my brother and I are ruled out due to us also having the disease (We still have normal kidney function at this time). If anyone is interested in donating a kidney or wants to promote that idea, you can private message me and I can give you information to do your own research (the screening process is completely anonymous to us). I will have more information about transplants, fundraising and more very soon. But in the meantime, donating through the website is easy. If anyone wants to give cash, I am able to submit that with your name so that you can be recognized :) Oh, and did I mention the National Foundation for Transplants has been around since 1983 helping people like my mom?! Your donation will be a tax-detectible contribution. Thank you in advance for your thoughts and support!

Check out this cool device that was used to transport my mom's kidney! This technology helps improve outcomes for kidney transplants. Instead of the kidney just being on ice, this device helps perfuse the kidney, regulate the temperature, and more. It also buys more time to find a match and get it to the facility where the patient is.

The American Kidney Fund has been our saving grace since my mom started dialysis over a year ago. They have covered her high insurance premiums so that she can receive the life saving dialysis that she needs. In the midst of us asking for donations for my mom's kidney transplant, I know Houston is still fresh on our minds and heavy in our hearts. Now, we have people vulnerable in Florida who are about to endure a stronger hurricane. We were fortunate to be in Austin and not loose power...something I was afraid of for my mother, who depends on a dialysis machine EVERY night. People who also depend on dialysis along our Texas coast and the people in Florida will need support too. This is a great organization. Some have expressed concern about what organizations to donate to...donate to this one.

If you are a dialysis patient, it’s especially important to take steps to make sure you’re ready if disaster strikes. We can’t always predict when something will happen to derail our treatment plans. There are some simple steps you can take to make sure you are prepared and have access to the things...

I am overwhelmed by the support my family has already received in response to my mother needing a kidney. Another way to help is to sign up to be an organ donor. Many think they are already signed up when they went to the DMV, but it only takes a second to double check! Give the gift of life!

Our Story

As many of you know my mother, Mary Mathis, was struggling with kidney failure for little over a year. She has Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and was on peritoneal dialysis for little over a year. We set this page and a fundraising page up when she was approved to be on the kidney transplant list. We were told that it could take up to 3 years to get a kidney but every case is different and that she could get the call at any moment. Well, she was only on the transplant list for a week! We were blown away with excitement and nervousness.

We were told by the transplant team at Baylor Scott & White in Temple (where she got her transplant) that she would need to fundraise approximately $25,000. This is the average cost of a kidney transplant patients during the first year post transplant. This includes everything from medical bills, medications, time out of work, cost of food and gas while commuting back and forth to the hospital for frequent check ups, etc. With that being said, we had only been fundraising for a week in preparation of her transplant. We have only reached about 10% of our goal. I am asking friends and family to continue to help in our fundraising efforts. Promoting her page, hosting raffles/events, directly donating, or helping with brainstorming ideas are all welcome. I will post updates when I can, but in the meantime, donating through the website is easy. If anyone wants to give cash, I am able to submit that with your name so that you can be recognized :) Oh, and did I mention the National Foundation for Transplants has been around since 1983 helping people like my mom?!
