Beall Memorial Art installed the Richard Overton monument at the Texas State Cemetery on April 8, 2022. The monument features a half-size relief of Overton holding his signature cigar sculpted by Donna Brown. Gilbert Beall sculpted the bronze Army seal also gracing the front of the monument. The monument also includes a bronze relief of a Texas flag, aptly named the Overton Flag, also by Donna Brown. Overton lived to the age of 112 and was a beloved Austinite, Texan, and Army veteran.

Thank you Mr. Overton for your service!

We are saddened to inform you that we have just lost our beloved and nation's treasure Richard Arvin Overton today at 112 years old. Mr. Overton has touched so many lives and filled us with laughter, especially with his secret to longevity being from ci**rs and whiskey and to keep on living. Mr. Overton was the nation's oldest man, 3rd oldest living man in the world and our Nation's oldest living veteran. Born in 1906, Mr. Overton has seen the changes first hand of how Austin has developed over these years and has lived a great and fulfilling life sitting on his porch with a cigar in his hand and greeting the people who come to visit him. We are deeply affected by the news but will continue to relive the memories we have with him and the joy he has brought into our lives and the entire nation.

Barbara Smith Conrad was an American operatic mezzo-soprano of international acclaim. In 1957, she became the focus of a racial controversy revolving around her role in a student opera at The University of Texas at Austin. Barbara Conrad is interred at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas.

Nearly 48 years after Charles Whitman's notorious shooting rampage on the University of Texas at Austin campus, his youngest victim — a baby still in utero — finally received a headstone this year.
