Did the most challenging bike ride of my life this last Saturday in Santa Fe, New Mexico with !

It was the third of three rides, all of which which got progressively more challenging for me. So much so that I briefly thought about not joining the group and doing my own ride on Saturday. Then I decided I’d at least start, and give myself permission to quit.

The 65 Austin-based riders I was with were all avid cyclists. Some even sponsored, and many highly competitive. I just ride now and then for fun.

They ride at A, B, and C pace for the monthly Breakfast Club rides in Austin all over the hills out west. I ride with the D pace group, away from cars, on the Southern Walnut Creek Trail.

Their bibs cost more than my whole cycling outfit. They clip in with fancy stiff shoes. I usually ride flat pedals with mountain bike shoes, and only bought clip ins a week before the trip in anticipation of the hellacious climbs.

I wanted to quit multiple times on Saturday. I wanted to cry multiple times too. My feet were cramping bad for much of the ride in my new shoes. My calves and back ached. About 3 miles from the top my left quad threatened to fully seize and topple me over, but luckily I was able to self massage it while riding at a turtle’s pace (my spirit animal for the weekend 🐢) and keep it from doing so. I ran out of water 2 miles from the peak (luckily a kind a hiker gave me a few sips a 1/4 way back down the mountain and the SAG van refilled me halfway back down).

Not sure how I made it all the way up 4,531 feet of elevation gain to a peak of 10,277 feet. But I did.

And the 20 miles back down wasn’t easy either with cramping feet.

But there was a glorious stretch of freshly paved smooth S-turns meandering amongst the pine trees that made it worth it (I think?)… and knowing that I CAN do hard f**king $hit!

40.16 miles took me 4:29:33. The fast dudes did it in under 2 hours.

Biking is freedom. And sometimes hell! But sometimes coming out on the other side of hell is worth it. ✌🏼

🥇 I did a thing this past Monday!

✅ I checked off a bucket list item — completing a sprint at the !

I hadn’t swam since middle school and started taking lessons in November.

But I was still terrified on race day of the open water swim in the deep murky water with lots of bodies flailing around me.

I didn’t sleep well the night before and felt nauseous the morning of.

I wasn’t worried about the bike or run. I knew I could do them and push through even if they were uncomfortable, but that swim!!

Would I need to grab a kayak? Would I freak out? Would my heart rate go through the roof? Would I inhale water? Would my goggles fog up? Would I be exhausted? Would I need to be pulled out? Would I DNF? Would I drown?! 😳

Then about 30 min before my wave I had no feeling at all. Nothing.

Then it was time to line up. Two people jump off the dock at a time into 9 feet of water every 5 seconds I’m up. Zero time to freak out. They yell jump. And you have to JUMP!

I drop about 4 feet below the water line and scramble to get back above before the next person goes, so I don’t get jumped on…

From there, I don’t actually remember much.

I remember sighting the first buoy and the first kayak. Maybe I’d need to grab it? Nope…

I doggie paddled for a few minutes to get my bearings under me… but I was surprisingly calm and breathing under control most of the time.

I was able to settle into free style, doggie paddled here and there, back stormed four times when I saw some open space for a breather, thought once more about grabbing a kayak about 2/3 through the swim, but didn’t… and then started smiling cause I had the realization that I totally got this! 😃

It’s not that it wasn’t challenging but it was easier and faster than I thought!

The bike was a lot fun — my fave of the three sports!

And the run was more uncomfortable than I thought it would be — heavy legs!!

750m swim — 27:34
12.3mi bike — 41:27
5k run — 28:20
Total — 1:47:04

And while I didn’t know if I’d do this ever again … I may have just signed up to beta my time next year! 🙊

Thanks (you know who you are) & for your help!
