Mobility work=massage+stretch

This client has been diligently working on correcting movement patterns that arose with a right knee MCL/ACL surgery some years ago.

We troubleshot some things he can do to keep working on a lunge, particularly with a lot of travel coming up. Simple things like using a massage gun as well as groin and IT band stretches before doing a lunge.

You can see his body trying to take weight off his right knee in the initial photo and then how it equals out by the end.

The knee, a door-hinge-joint, often has multiple layers of compensation playing into chronic pain patterns. It’s flanked by some really mobile joints, the ankle and the hip below and above it. The ankle/hip on same side can jump in to help and I often see the left inner thigh tighten up to take the load off.

Jaw alignment=core stability!

Issues like TMJ or even chronic tensing of the jaw can mirror down the torso and make connecting to our deeper core muscles more difficult.

I have a little hack I use with clients who present with this, you can see immediate results ⬆️.

Ever been told you hyperextend or lock your knees? Most folks tend to overcorrect when they hear this and then buckle into their knees too much.

Fast forward some years and they start having hip, knee and back pains because this overcorrection doesn’t allow them to engage their core and pelvic floor properly.

The person 👆🏼 has had chronic hip pain on their right side for years, and go figure, it’s the same side they can now not fully straighten from over-correcting for so long. This was a week ago, when they came into today, their hip pain had drastically reduced (!) from doing this:

Lock your knees, yes, it’s ok.
Feel your quads (front of thighs) tighten up.
Soften your knees EVER so slightly and see if you can feel your core light up a little bit.
THIS is your happy place for today.

The body can change its equilibrium day-to-day, it’s one of our superpowers. This is a good way to start until you can navigate into the best place for your knees without thinking.

Build confidence from the outside in! 💪🏼

One of my favorite things about working with shoulder issues/shoulder impingement/frozen shoulder is how, when resolved, it completely shifts how the client projects themself.

Shoulder issues are directly related the breathing issues. A tight pec minor from holding a phone, driving, typing and sleeping with your arm tucked in, can all impede proper breathing and create shoulder restrictions that get reinforced with every breath.

Check out this difference left shoulder to right after ONE breath opening maneuver. The left half of the torso is broader and more open.

It’s particularly fun to witness these shifts in folks who are looking for a new job, launching a new business and/or looking for a partner, as more of their true essence comes forward in a calm, confident way. 💗

Eppppiiic!!! For YEARS I’ve wondered what would happen to my body if I used the everyday for a month. This contraption is unique because you can stretch the back AND front of your ankles (which a lot of people overuse instead of their butt muscles). Tight ankles can pull down on our spines and neck, referring tension all the way up the body.

This year it was one of my resolutions and it did not disappoint!!! Body is changing shape, more flexible in areas that I thought were just weak for years when I just couldn’t access them cause my ankles/calves/hamstrings were so tight. Check out the progress⬇️

Day 5
Hamstrings not as tight upon waking. Torso and hips rotated better & more even on run. Feet more relaxed and easier to breathe.

Day 9
Mobility work stretching new area. No longer calves as much as T8. Less QL tension.

Day 22
Mobility continues to show new places. Still mid-back and now lots of stretching around knees over calves/hams.

Day 23
Legs felt so fast! Light on my feet. Heart was the thing that couldn’t keep up. Felt taller on my legs. More sway in hips—run felt ‘sexier’. Shaved 20% off usual run time.

Day 24
Sore in new places on the backside! Glutes feel like 🍒and mid-upper back feels like I lifted weights. This would be because I was twisting more when I ran=more core!

In 2010, Shannon Rashap launched her practice in East Austin, a year after the sudden death of her father which set off a period of intense, chronic pain. Formerly an avid athlete, after this traumatic experience, she was no longer able to process her stress in the same way, so she started training....

One of my main objectives when I work with clients is getting them to feel their power through their bodies. The ‘Power Center’ in several Eastern practices is at the solar plexus, the split of the rib cage.

There are plenty of reasons both physical and emotional that this area shuts off. In a physical sense, a pulled forward posture can come from a variety of places and close off this area of agency and will. Most commonly that I see are: tight quads, restricted diaphragm, tight SCM muscles in the neck and tension in the guts. There’s also always the psoas and its ability to pull us into flexion.

Personally, I think the psoas is too often pointed to when the actual issue is some of these other areas. That said, last year I finally tried the Hip Hook by and was sold. It is hands down the best psoas and iliacus release I’ve ever tried and I’ve seen it do wonders for some of my clients.

Yesterday the lovely, was feeling tension in her chest, which restricted her breathing. We loosened up her quads and used the hook—see before and after. One could do the same at home with a foam roller/massager in tandem with the hook for opening up the chest and breath naturally.

Link to the hook in bio with 10% off. 🤸🏼‍♂️

Doing a detox or dry January this month? May sound crazy, but detoxing your organs can actually refer pain and pull on different parts of your body.

This client’s psoas was pulling on her lower back today but we found that the issue was not the psoas itself, but the liver pulling on the psoas.

Released her liver and retested her psoas without any pain referral to her lower back!

Epic transformation in less than an hour!!

Been working with for a couple months now correcting out the compensatory movement patterns from an old knee surgery. The opposite knee has still be holding onto some of those ‘helper’ tendencies that have led to fallout pain patterns.

Note on the left photo, if the knee had an eye, it’s not looking straight on. After some gait work, we got better integrity of hip to knee stabilizers. Right side shows that patella looking straight on.

Lunges are coming up!

As we officially start the holidays this week, feelings of overwhelm are likely to occur for a lot of us. We also may be triggered by someone in our lives or reminded of a traumatic event.

I personally feel like the wellness community over emphasizes the notion of ‘grounding’ instead of being centered. Here’s what I do when I have 👆🏼feelings. Link in profile.
