John "Jack" Wesley Newman

John “Jack” Wesley Newman, age 95, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on the evening of Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Sacred Heart Assisted Living with family by his side. On October 22, 1930, Jack made his entrance to this world early and at home in Austin, weighing in at less than three pounds to parents, John Wesley and Hilda (Olsen) Newman. Since birth, Jack has been beating the odds and standing strong. He attended Austin High School. Jack proudly joined the United States Army in 1948, during the Korean War. During his time in the military, he saw many things and was one of the lucky ones that came home to tell his story. In 1952, he was honorably discharged and received the Silver Star Medal for his valor. Upon arriving back in Minnesota, he finally got to take his pen pal through the war, Marilyn Joseph, out for a date; the rest was history. The pair were wed on June 21, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and together raised five children. The couple would often be found together enjoying a cup of coffee and with each other’s company. Jack was a hard-working man all of his days. He began his career working for 10 years at American Auto Parts, salvaging cars. Following that, he worked for 30 years at Elk River Concrete, retiring in 1996. Though he retired, he didn’t stop working; he continued his employment part time at The Plant Place, Sears, and Lansing Corners. Jack enjoyed driving stock cars, fishing, hunting, and camping in his younger years. As he grew older, he enjoyed tinkering in his garage, growing his garden, watching Westerns, American Pickers, and The Curse of Oak Island. He also loved his pets dearly. Though he could be seen as a little grouchy and stubborn, which is something his family endearingly teased him about, those who were lucky to be close to him always knew how much he loved his family. Above all, he was a devoted husband to his beloved Marilyn and cared for her throughout her own health challenges. Before she passed, they celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Jack is survived by his children, Becky (Gary) Rector of Austin, Bill (Joanne) Newman of Blooming Prairie, and Glenn Newman of Austin; daughters-in-law, Deb Newman of Austin and Babs Newman of Austin; grandchildren, Bobbi Jo (Jason), Wendi (Greg), Brandon (Lacey), Jackie, Jessica (Nick), Vanessa (Mark), Tiffany, Ashley, Jordan, Elizabeth (Stephen), Hayley (David), and Zach; great-grandchildren, Jacob (Katherine), Seth, Cale, Alijha, Naryk, Norah, Jayden, Alex, Lilly, Lyla, Jeremy, Jonathan, Emilee, Mickela, Michael, Avery, Sierra, Emma, Ely, Olivia, Marlow, Parker, and Wesley; and great-great grandchildren, Benjamin, Theodore, Jamison, Hazel, Bentley, Bobo, Louie, Asher, Josiah, Christopher, and Elias. Jack was reunited in heaven with his wife, Marilyn in 2012; parents, John and Hilda Newman; daughter, Mary (Greg) Thompson; son, John Newman; grandson, Jayden Howe; sisters, Betty Ricketts, Maddie (George) Miller, Gertie (Charles) Nicolson, and Dorothy Newman; and brother, William (Ardis) Newman.

The memorial service for Jack will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home in Austin. The visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday. Jack graciously donated his body to research with the Mayo Clinic Anatomy Bequest Program. When his donation is complete, he will be reunited with the love of his life at Grandview Cemetery in Austin. Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes of Austin are assisting the family with arrangements.

Gustavo Ivan Xicara Mayen

Gustavo Ivan Xicara Mayen, age 37, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Friday, October 31, 2025, in Guatemala City, Guatemala. A caring and gentle soul, Ivan will be remembered as loving, respectful, responsible, fearful of God, and always smiling. You could always rely on a helping hand from him and joke to ease the situation. He was a muscular guy with luscious curls; Fabio as others would say. Ivan could make anyone feel welcome, even if he didn’t know you. He wasn’t afraid of anything and wasn’t afraid to fail, as long as he tried. Ivan was the only man in a household full of women for a long time. He was their protector and listener and was always looking out for them if they needed anything. Ivan was someone to talk to and would never judge you. He was so kind and gentle, and always generous. He would literally get out of his car on the street and help random people push their car and give them a ride to where they needed to go, especially in winter. He even gave a random guy in Vegas a ride to his block (we probably should have been more cautious, lol). But that’s him, that’s Ivan. He was a strong man that ended up with a soft spot for four cats, Moo Moo, Creekee, Mushu, and Dumpling.

Ivan will be missed like crazy by his family; mother, Emma Mayen-Morgan and father, Thomas Morgan; sisters, Yosselin Xicara-Mayen and Melanie Sanchez; future nephew, whom he would have taught to wrestle; and his fur babies, whom he loved deeply. We know, trust, and believe that one day we will see each other again in Heaven. It’s only a see you later, it’s never a goodbye.

Te amamos, por siempre.

“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 ESV

A celebration of Ivan’s life will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. with a short prayer service beginning at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home in Austin. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. The family requests you dress in white or bright colors. Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes of Austin are assisting the family with arrangements.

Judith “Judy” Ann Johnson

Judith “Judy” Ann Johnson, age 87, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, entered eternal rest surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield, Minnesota.

Judy was born on December 4, 1937, to Ervin and Edrie (Thompson) Bakkedahl and grew up on her parents’ dairy farm, where she learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and faith. From an early age, she was active in her church — baptized, confirmed, and later married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield, Minnesota. Judy was a graduate of Hayfield High School, Class of 1955. She carried her hometown values with her throughout her life.

On October 12, 1957, she married her soulmate, Maynard Johnson, beginning a love story that spanned 72 years together (68 of them married). They built a beautiful life in Blooming Prairie, raising three children who were the center of her life. Judy was the heart of her family — always present and always ready with a warm hug, a listening ear, and her trademark common-sense advice. Whether it was helping with homework, cheering from the bleachers, clapping at concerts, or offering encouragement at the kitchen table, she made sure her children always knew how deeply they were supported and loved.

Judy spent 42 remarkable years driving bus #17 for Blooming Prairie Transportation, retiring in 2017. Her “bus kids” held a special place in her heart — she delighted in watching four generations grow up before her eyes. She was also a proud 26-year Avon Presidential Award winner, known for her dedication, attention to detail, and genuine connection with her customers and friends in the community.

Some of Judy’s favorite pastimes were cooking, camping, square dancing, bowling, snowmobiling, bird watching, and doing crossword puzzles with Maynard — but nothing brought her greater joy than being surrounded by family. Her loved ones are blessed with countless memories of summer days camping at the lake with her sisters, and the holiday magic she created for her children and grandchildren every Christmas. Judy made her home a welcoming haven — filled with laughter, good food, and open arms. Known affectionately as “MaMa Jude” or “My Second Mom” by so many, Judy had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel like family. Her tell-it-like-it-is honesty, paired with an open heart and genuine love, left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Judy is survived by her beloved husband, Maynard Johnson; children, Brad (Nancy) Johnson of Lakeville, Minnesota, Curt (Sallye) Johnson of Owasso, Oklahoma, and Karen (Wade) Peterson of Blaine, Minnesota; grandchildren, Maliah (Brad), Ryan (Stephanie), Nicole (Sam), Danielle (Ryan), Brandon (Anna), and Celine (Ahmad); and nine great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Holland, Benedict, Gemma, Greysen, Miller, Graham, Adeline, and Presley. She is also survived by her sisters, Janice (Russ) Johnson, Laurene Heydt, Lavonne (Russ) Boullion; sister-in-law, Barb Bakkedahl; many special nieces and nephews; and her cherished cats, Stanley and Stella.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Edrie (Thompson) Bakkedahl; her stillborn daughter; brother, Lowell Bakkedahl; and brother-in-law, Virgil Heydt.

A memorial service for Judy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie. The visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Blooming Prairie. Services are prearranged and performed by Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home in Blooming Prairie.

Jesse Michael Boelman

Jesse Michael Boelman, 34, of Austin, MN, passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, after navigating the storms of mental health and addiction.

Jesse was born on June 5, 1991, to Patty and Tony Boelman in Rochester, MN. He grew up in Walker, MN, and later moved to Austin, MN, where his quick wit, loyal heart, creative nature and big smile drew others in wherever he went.

He was known for his love of all thing’s superheroes, and comic books. He had an immense love of art and created handmade gifts for family and friends. Jesse was always thinking of others and was able to quote movies at the drop of a dime, as well as could conversate for hours. Though he faced challenges, he never lost the love of his family and friends. Those that knew him will remember his beautiful eyes, smile and full of life stories – he also gave the best hugs.

Jesse found great joy and purpose when he worked at Berg’s Nursery. It was more than a job to him – it was a place where he built friendships, shared laughter, and took pride in creating beautiful landscapes. The kindness and respect shown to him by the Berg family and team meant more than words can express, and our family will always be deeply thankful for the care and support they gave him.

Jesse’s journey with mental health and alcohol use was not a sign of weakness, but of how hard he fought to find peace. Our family shares this openly because we believe his life and struggles can remind others that it’s okay to talk about these things, to reach out for help, and to hold on to hope.

He is survived by his mom, Patty Kiley Boelman of Austin; father, Tony (Angie) Boelman of Willow River; sister, Lacey (Brandon) Rector of Austin; brothers, Kyle Boelman of Austin and Jared (Brittany) Lahti of Bemidji, MN; and sister, Megan (Brent) Clark of Becker, MN; nieces and nephews, Naryk, Norah, Hayden, Hudson and Hailee, who will carry his memory with love and pride. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Donna DuFour and Aeiko Boelman; maternal grandparents, Dennis and Patricia Kiley; paternal uncle, Ralph Boelman; and maternal aunt, Maggie Kiley Anderson.

Our family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the first responders, law enforcement, and medical personnel who cared for Jesse and our family that night. We recognize the emotional toll their work carries, and we are deeply grateful for their compassion, professionalism, and dedication in the most difficult of circumstances.

A celebration of life will be held from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home in Austin.

Jesse will forever be remembered for the love he gave, the laughter he brought, and the reminder that compassion – for ourselves and others – can save lives.
