Who Do You Trust the Most — and Why?
One of the most common questions I get when explaining ChkM8 is:
“If ratings are consensual, won’t people only exchange ratings with people they already know?”
At first glance, that question could understandably be someone’s initial concern. But when you think about it, seeing ourselves through the eyes of those who know us best is often the first step in building trust.
We’ve all heard a parent say, “Well, I know what I raised.”
The people who know you best are usually the people you trust the most. So of course a ChkM8 user will seek out those folks first — to build their reputation ratings with people who already have real context.
As more ratings are received from those trusted connections, a ChkM8 composite score begins to form. That score becomes a digital foundation — one built on familiarity, consistency, and credibility.
And once that foundation is in place, something interesting happens.
As people begin to see their ChkM8 ratings take shape, a natural psychological shift occurs. When something of value is earned, it also becomes something people want to protect.
As behavioral economist Daniel Kahneman explains, “People are far more motivated to avoid losing something they value than to gain something new.”
That instinct applies directly to reputation. Once a positive rating foundation exists, behavior becomes more intentional. Choices are made with greater awareness, because reputation is no longer abstract — it’s visible, earned, and worth maintaining.
That’s when ratings stop being just feedback and start functioning as social currency.
The value of ChkM8 ratings begins to unfold beyond family and friends — with social groups, organizations, and in professional or academic settings where trust matters.
Starting with people you know isn’t a limitation to the ratings process.
It’s the most natural way to build confidence, show consistency, and establish credibility — and then carry that trust forward into the spaces where it needs to travel.
