If this picture made you smile, pass it on to someone you love today!

A wonderful group of volunteers dropped off handmade Valentine’s cards for patients and staff at Hospice Austin's Christopher House.

Moments like these—people showing kindness and spreading love—are exactly what Hospice Austin is all about.

Being a nonprofit, Hospice Austin is always looking for ways to give back to the community that continually shows up for us. Today, we were proud to host a We Are Blood mobile blood drive right here in our parking lot.

A huge thank you to all of our staff members who were able to stop by and make a donation. ❤️

If you’re interested in donating blood or hosting a blood drive of your own, please reach out to We Are Blood. https://weareblood.org/

They are currently in urgent need of O‑negative blood due to significant patient needs across Central Texas.

During January’s ice storm, two of our night nurses sheltered in place at Hospice Austin's Christopher House for several days to ensure every patient continued to receive comfort, dignity, and compassion — no matter the weather.

Hearing them share what those days were like is a powerful reminder of the dedication, resilience, and heart all of our nurses bring to their work every single day. They are true heroes.

If you’re able, please consider supporting Hospice Austin so we can continue being there for families when they need us most. Every gift makes a difference.

We truly have the BEST team, and it means so much when their dedication is recognized by the communities they serve.

We’re incredibly proud to share that one of our Nurse Practitioners, Justin Whitley, has been named Caregiver of the Year by Harrell Funeral Home.

Congratulations, Justin — and thank you for the compassion, skill, and heart you bring to every family you care for.

Katie McPherson was also a finalist for this year's award for her work with patients and families at Hospice Austin's Christopher House.

Despite all of our careful preparations, this ice storm left its mark on Hospice Austin's Christopher House. A pipe burst in one of our patient rooms, a stark reminder of the building’s age and vulnerability.

As Austin’s only nonprofit hospice, Hospice Austin relys on community support. Your donation today will help repair the storm damage and provide essential supplies. Every gift makes a difference. Thank you for helping us care for our community.

You may not know her name, but if you or someone you love has been cared for by Hospice Austin in the last 45 years, you have Gene Anne Sandbach to thank. Today we honor her, a woman whose compassion helped create Hospice Austin 45 years ago.

In 1979, Gene Anne and her husband, Dr. John Sandbach, founded Hospice Austin—at a time when hospice care was still new in the U.S. and no one was offering hospice services in Central Texas.

Gene Anne served as a pharmacist at the original Christopher House in the 90’s when it was an AIDS facility. After its closure due to lack of funding, she played a pivotal role in helping Hospice Austin acquire the building, rallying community leaders to transform it into the inpatient hospice facility it is today.

But Gene Anne didn’t stop there. She continued her work as a Hospice Austin pharmacist and helped raise millions of dollars for our mission. She even launched our very first fundraiser, The Friends of Hospice Austin Showhouse, introducing our work to the wider community.

There will never be another Gene Anne. We are profoundly grateful for her vision, her heart, and her friendship. She will be deeply missed, but the staff at Hospice Austin will proudly carry on her mission.

Hospice Austin's Christopher House is our 24 hour in-patient facility and care doesn't stop because of the weather. These pictures highlight the dedication of the staff who have all sheltered in place to keep Hospice Austin running and take care of our patients and their families.

"While the storm tested roads and routines, it never tested the commitment of the Hospice Austin staff. They showed up with skill, kindness, and courage for our patients and their families, and we are profoundly thankful for each and every one of them" said Keisha Jones, Hospice Austin Chief Clinical Officer.

For many people, hospice care is misunderstood. It isn’t about giving up, it’s about making sure every person can live their final months with comfort, control, and dignity.

Here’s how Austin brings dignity to patients:
• Comfort-focused care that relieves pain and other symptoms so patients can be present with loved ones.
• Care on the patient’s terms — choosing where they want to be, how they want to be supported, and what quality of life means to them.
• Emotional, spiritual, and practical support that honors the whole person, not just their medical condition.
• A team that truly listens and adapts care to each patient’s values, beliefs, and goals.
• Time with family made more meaningful because the crises and chaos of late‑stage illness are gently managed.
• Respect at every step, including cultural, personal, and spiritual dignity.

If you’ve ever wondered what hospice truly is, we’re here to help you understand your options.

We often receive thank‑you notes and updates from families, and each one reminds us why our mission matters.

There are many choices when it comes to hospice care — and they are not all the same.

Thank you to every family who has trusted to walk that final journey with you and your loved one.
