This man's horrific story of s*xual abuse in the Seventh-day Adventist church is the tip of the iceberg. It's time we wrestle with the reality that abuse occurs as often within church, as without; we can and indeed we must, for the children. And we must disrupt systems which protect perpetrators and disbelieve survivors--which, in turn, draw more perpetrators.

Having grown-up in a 5th generation Seventh-Day Adventist home, as a child I personally witnessed perpetrators being moved from church to church, school to school, and up into administration rather than the church taking the action that was necessary to protect children and for the sake of justice. Heartbreakingly, the church of my childhood must face this head on with great integrity or, at some point, they will face a scandal like the Catholic Church. That they had not, is an enormous part of why I left several years ago. When I did so, I sent a letter of why to the church I attended, the local conference, the North American Division, and to the world headquarters. Only my local church responded, an email of CYA. The lack of response confirmed what I had known and why I left.

We must not only address perpetrators, but how as communities we protect and enable them.

NBC News uncovered a 50-year pattern of s*x abuse, silence and cover-up in the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination.

This poem beautifully and poignantly describes the light sensitivity individuals live with after an insult to the brain.

"'Vintage' Edison LED bulbs sear my eyes and brain
to the point where I need medication to function and
sunglasses to navigate my way through the living
world, the living room.

My partner knows me. Knows that I will take months
to decide upon paint chips and upholstery fabric,

knows that I prefer the dark with a smattering of
seasonal lights strung along the mantel with few lumens,

and he thinks he understands why, though it bothers him
that I am not moved by his need for brightness.

He thinks he knows me, but he cannot know me.
He cannot see through my eyes, and though truly

I wish I could, I cannot escape my head and settle
comfortably behind the ridge of his forehead, either.

Current top relationship experts insist we should not know
everything about each other. Leave the candle of mystery lit.

Learn everything and risk dousing all the flames of passion.
Lean in too close and risk smoldering that flame.

I say fine to all this. Let's give our candle plenty of air.
May it burn hot, but--can we cover it with a lampshade?

If you have suffered a brain injury, or want to understand it better, Amy Baskin (a Portland author and English teacher) has written a poignant, witty and vividly descriptive book of poetry, aptly titled Skull, that is highly worth the read.

Dan Allender is one of the kindest and most insightful persons I have ever met. Which, if I may add, is an unusual combination. He has partnered with Steve Call for a new book, The Deeply-Rooted Marriage, that's worth checking out. If you pre-order (before January 21) and fill out the form on Thomas Nelson, you get access to a 2 hour webinar on January 16 from 2-4 PM, a journal, conversation starters, and a sample of the book. (I receive no kickbacks from this.)

Whether mild, moderate or severe, if this sounds like you or someone you know, I encourage you to begin to write out all the times you remember some impact to your head or body over your entire life. That includes car accidents, falling from a high chair or tree a a child, playing contact sports (especially football), intimate partner violence, hitting your head on a cupboard, having something fall on your head (like laundry detergent from a shelf), and consider what your cumulative history is.
