Women are at an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease as well as other neurological disorders.

It is not yet fully understood why women are more likely to get Alzheimer’s disease. We do know that they have some unique risk factors or can be more affected by:

Menopause.
Depression.
Being less physically active.
Having a copy of the APOE-4 allele (genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease).
Diabetes.

More research is needed to better understand these differences — and provide hope for both prevention and treatment.

Our goal? To advance sex-based research, treatment, disease prevention and education for brain health.

When we are able, something as simple as talking to a loved one who is living with dementia about what we are doing in the moment can go such a long way in helping them to feel included (and loved).

Dementia strategies

Communicating with a loved one with dementia takes training and practice. According to Dementia Educator Teepa Snow use of strategies such as a warmer tone with hand gestures and asking the right questions can prevent conflict. When a loved one for example asked about her sister that passed away 7 years ago, instead of reminding her that she died, take the opportunity and ask her if she missed her, do not lie but use logic. Keep in mind that the loved one is lost in her time and it would not be good if she thinks everyone is against her. Here at Ruth Companion Care Agency LLC, we train our caregivers strategies to use with dementia clients.
