Teachers and Researchers United Teachers and Researchers United (TRU) is a movement of graduate student workers unionizing at Johns H

TRU is an independent organization of graduate student workers at Johns Hopkins University working to win improvements in our working conditions, and more importantly to build a powerful voice for graduate workers. From its labs to its classrooms, graduate workers at JHU make the university run. As researchers and as teaching and research assistants, we exercise care and expertise in building the twin pillars of higher education: research and instruction. And despite that, the administration worsens the quality of our healthcare plan, increases our TA responsibilities by shrinking cohort sizes, creates competition amongst students by creating an uneven wage structure, and reduces the number of courses available to graduate students. All of these conditions make it nearly impossible to meet all of our obligations while providing the first rate instruction we are capable of providing to the undergraduates, and less likely that we will be able to live healthy and productive lives as members of the JHU community. It also indicates that the administration doesn’t respect our contribution to the university. The only way we can change the unacceptable situation facing graduate workers and the undergraduates we teach is to come together and organize!

JHU has spent that time justifying why the university cannot use its vast resources to help him. Johns Hopkins’ must drop its illegal investigation into the Union and its representatives for a collective decision to be BDS-compliant. Their interference is part of a broader pattern of the university, and universities across the country, punishing, intimidating, and silencing Pro Palestine support and suppressing student and worker movements.

JHU hides behind the smokescreen of democracy while illegally intervening in the Union’s member-led democratic processes.
TRU-UE 197 will not compromise on our commitments, disrespect the will of our members, and cave to the disgusting union-busting intimidation tactics of Johns Hopkins.
