Memories of Maryland National Guard Honor Guard 2008-2017

Happy Centennial to William Donald Schaefer, born on this day in 1921. He was mayor of Baltimore, governor of Maryland and ended his long career as state comptroller.

I was part of the Baltimore renaissance in the 70s and my career was helped by the great people in his administration.

He passed in 2011.

When I was director of the MD National Guard Honor Guard it fell to me to plan, rehearse and execute the largest funeral ceremonies experienced in the city and state in a long time. I don’t think there has been one on such a scale since.

Here is the story of that week in April 2011. A long read but lots of interesting information on the behind the scenes activities.

The Baltimore National Cemetery couldn't find any relatives of former U.S. Army Captain Larry Casey, so they put out an appeal to veterans on social media to attend his funeral on Tuesday. Two hundred people showed up — including the dead man's wife and daughter.
