✨ Advanced Practice Fellow Spotlight: Carissa Garcia MPAS, PA ✨
The Johns Hopkins Advanced Practice Leadership Academy is proud to highlight our fellow, Carissa Garcia, PA.
We’re excited to recognize Carissa Garcia, the inaugural Director of Advanced Practice at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Carissa is a strategic and operational leader for a diverse, growing team of nurse practitioners and physician assistants across multiple specialties. With over 20 years of progressive experience in clinical practice, education, and healthcare leadership, she is deeply committed to advancing the role of APPs in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.
In her current role, Carissa focuses on advancing APP scope of practice, strategic growth, recognition, and professional development, collaborating closely with executive and medical leadership. She serves on key committees including Credentialing, Bylaws, and the Quality & Safety Council, helping shape systems that support APP excellence.
Carissa began her career as a surgical physician assistant, with extensive clinical experience in general, bariatric, trauma, and plastic surgery. She earned both her BS in Health Sciences and Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Duquesne University.
Prior to joining Sibley, Carissa served as Director of Advanced Practice Providers at The George Washington University Hospital, where she provided strategic oversight for 130+ APPs across 30 service lines and led initiatives that elevated APP visibility and professional growth.
In addition to her administrative leadership, Carissa is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the PA Studies Program at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and an active member of the American Academy of Physician Associates and the DC Academy of Physician Assistants.
Dedicated to empowering APPs and fostering interprofessional collaboration, Carissa continues to champion the evolution of advanced practice roles as vital partners in shaping the future of healthcare. 💙
