You’re not doing anything wrong if your mind suddenly “wakes up” the moment you try to fall asleep. You are not alone!
When the world finally gets quiet, your brain finally has space to process emotions, memories, and unfinished thoughts from the day. That processing is normal… it just doesn’t feel great at 11 pm.
In therapy, I often remind clients:
Your brain isn’t trying to sabotage your sleep.
It’s trying to protect you — it just doesn’t always pick the right timing.
Here are a few gentle ways to support a calmer mind at night:
✨ Try a 2–3 minute brain dump
Just bullet points — get the thoughts out of your head and onto paper.
✨ Create an “If-Then” plan
“If my thoughts start spiraling, then I’ll return to slow breathing for five minutes.”
✨ Shift into your senses
Notice the weight of the blanket, the texture of the sheets, the rise and fall of your breath.
These aren’t quick fixes, but they are skills — and they get easier with practice.
