Myth 1: Contraceptives cause infertility.

Fact: Contraceptives do not cause infertility. Fertility usually returns shortly after stopping most methods.

Myth 2: Using contraceptives makes women gain a lot of weight.

Fact: Not all contraceptives cause weight gain. Some people may experience minor changes, but it is not a universal side effect.

Myth 3: Contraceptives are only for women.

Fact: Men also have contraceptive options such as condoms and vasectomy. Family planning is a shared responsibility.

Myth 4: Contraceptives are unsafe.

Fact: Modern contraceptives are safe for most people when prescribed and monitored by healthcare professionals.

Myth 5: You don’t need contraception if you’re breastfeeding.

Fact: Breastfeeding may delay fertility, but it is not a reliable form of contraception unless specific conditions (exclusive breastfeeding within 6 months postpartum) are met.

Contraceptives are tools for choice, safety, and empowerment. Don’t let myths hold you back. Always consult a health professional for the method best for you.

MiHLO Impact Story – Kenya 🇰🇪

During a three-month project in Homa Bay County, one of Kenya’s 47 counties, we took a significant step toward strengthening health literacy.

We distributed MiHLO pamphlets on various medical conditions to decision-makers in 96 hospitals including hospital directors, CEOs, registrars, and physicians-in-charge.

To ensure accessibility and inclusivity, the pamphlets were made available in English and translated into Kiswahili, a widely spoken language in Kenya.

By placing these resources directly in the hands of healthcare leaders, MiHLO is equipping them with tools to support patients, improve communication, and enhance healthcare outcomes in their communities.

This is more than just pamphlet distribution it’s about bridging the gap between medical knowledge and patient understanding, one hospital at a time.

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲

I want to share the story of two mothers: one living in the United States and the other in Africa, both of whom experienced complicated pregnancies and childbirths.

The first mother faced a medical emergency at 38 weeks of pregnancy when she suffered a detached placenta, which led to severe internal bleeding. This situation necessitated an urgent delivery to save both her life and her baby’s. Thankfully, both the mother and the baby survived. I know this because I am that mother. The daughter I carried has grown up to become a West Point graduate and has served our country in South Korea.

In contrast, the second mother in Africa also encountered complications during her pregnancy and delivery, resulting in her child needing lifelong care due to various health deficits. Tragically, this situation involves my relative in Nigeria.

My connection to Africa runs deep; I was born in Nigeria and spent my formative years there. I visit as often as possible, always observing the healthcare landscape. With over 20 years of experience as a medical writer in the United States, I have gained a unique perspective on healthcare. This perspective includes recognizing the importance of health literacy in patient health and outcomes and how language barriers can limit access to care and lead to severe complications.

While complicated pregnancies can be extreme, a lack of health literacy can also result in severe consequences in less severe medical situations. Poor health outcomes and premature deaths are significant issues often caused by a lack of knowledge about various conditions and their management. My mission is to address this gap and improve health outcomes globally.
