Most children consider their pets as part of their family and as friends. Losing a pet to old age, illness, or accident can be difficult for a child. It is important that children learn healthy ways to cope with difficult things. Keeping them mentally healthy will impact their physical health. Let your child know the truth about their pet’s death. Let them know it’s natural to feel sad and they are not alone. Look ahead by keeping ways to remember their pet, yet still move on.

Healthy Habit: Covering Coughs and Sneezes!
Teaching your child to cover their mouth when they cough and sneeze is an important step to building healthy, clean habits and being considerate of others health. Germs and viruses spread through the air and can cause influenza, colds, coughs, and other respiratory illnesses. The best way to cover a cough or sneeze is with a tissue or an arm.

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to something harmless that it mistakenly sees as dangerous. Kids can experience seasonal allergies in the spring as pollen spreads and plants begin to grow. Signs to watch for include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, sore or swollen throat, shortness of breath, hives, and—less commonly—stomach cramps, vomiting, or diarrhea. When symptoms become overwhelming, a doctor can help identify the cause and recommend the best treatment for your child. Stay safe!

Healthy Habits: Sun Protection! Don’t underestimate the power of the sun! 🥵

Your child’s skin is delicate and more prone to getting sun burnt! Use sunscreen to help reduce the risk of being sunburnt, early skin aging, and increased risk of skin cancer. Use sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays, are water-resistant, and have an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply sunscreen 15-30 min before going outside and don’t forget to reapply! ☀️🧴

For many kids, reading doesn’t come easily. Building skills in letters, sounds, and words is essential for lifelong learning, and there are simple ways to make reading more exciting. Let your child choose books they enjoy, read and reread favorites, read aloud together, play word games, and create everyday opportunities to read and write. Even e‑books can help spark interest. If you’re concerned about your child’s reading progress, talk with their doctor for additional guidance. Happy reading!

Most kids ages 5 to 12 need about 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night. Sleepwalking can occur during deep sleep and may make a child appear awake while walking or sitting up. It can run in families and may be triggered by stress, fever, or not getting enough sleep. Occasional sleepwalking is usually not a concern, but it’s important to talk with a doctor if it happens nearly every night. If your child sleepwalks often, keeping their environment safe can help prevent injuries.
