As a Naturopathic student, we are to write a research paper on an area of interest each year of school which must increase in length as we progress in knowledge.

Year 1, I knew I wanted to discuss Light as a Nutrient because it was something I'd been already going deep on for the last couple of years in my free time. I did not know where this would take me.

After writing my first year's paper, I couldn't just stop. I continued this topic in a much more in-depth look which covers in total 3 years worth of research papers. This is where "Light from a Naturopathic Perspective" came from.

On top of the 2-3 years of prior research, I spent most of my free time from homework reading research papers, listening to lectures, podcasts, taking notes, and spinning my mind on how this all works together. It was exhausting and frustrating, but I loved every minute of it. Then the trick was putting it on paper in a way that actually made sense to anyone, not just a Naturopath.

There is nothing but passion and drive for truth in this paper. It is not perfect, or peer-edited, but in a world of AI-written-everything, I think it is refreshing to see things from a human mind.

I may add to this still before publishing it as an official book because this is still only scratching the surface.

If I could use 1 tool, it would be these cheap, sweet pellets that are energy medicine.

This person attended a recent class where we discussed homeopathy during cold and flu season. It just so happened that they’d been struggling with incredibly unsettled bowels for the last 9 days!

Nothing was working, they were doing all of the things: keeping a simple diet, drinking herbal teas, hydrating, and taking some over the counter medication like pepto bismol. Nothing touched it.

It’s true we may naturally become ill this time of year for a number of reasons, but the holiday season filled with sugar is just another way to completely suppress the immune system to allow for illness to move in!

Think about how many times a week or day white sugar enters your body:
➡️Added to coffee
➡️Sweet morning treat like a donut
➡️Cookies in the office break room
➡️Quick chocolate pick-me-up
➡️Can of pop with lunch
➡️Candy bowl on the counter
➡️Mixed drink in the evening
the list goes on.

While it is totally okay to have a treat here and there, doing this all the time sets the body up to fail, and then we wonder why we are so run down each year!

In a world of severe nutritional depletion, it’s important to keep the body as well-mineralized as possible with the sugar alternatives listed. Other options may include barley malt extract or coconut sugar.

If I do personally use a white, granulated sugar for baking, it is organic to ensure the sugar beets were not genetically modified or sprayed with toxic chemicals; however, it is still not mineralizing or health-supportive… but a better option than the typical white sugar we know.

The utmost optimal way to eat
🌞🍂❄️🌸 by the season

While the science takes you for a loop, the application is extremely simple.

Living in todays society, we eat the same way year round thanks to global supply chains. However this is not sustainable and biologically “impossible”. Creating more issues than we may think.

I think the term “seasonal eating” gets lost in translation when we are connected to people throughout the world. Dates and bananas may be in season by the equator, but that couldn’t be further from the truth up north where we have a true winter - carbohydrates do not grow. We mainly prioritize fats, meat, and ferments to get us by.

I understand not everyone lives around farmers or can readily grow their own food, but local grocers are popping up more than ever. Even big box stores often offer local produce and meat if you search around enough.

Instead of pressuring yourself to eat all local foods, this is a lifestyle. Go slow… Aim for 30% (or whatever amount) local at first and slowly build your network. See what your area has to offer. Talk to vendors at the summer farmers market to see what they offer in the off season.

December is the month everything truly slows down. 🌬️

The end of fall into early winter marks a distinct shift in nature where the rush to prep for the cold has finally halted. We get to spend more time celebrating with others, eating hearty foods, and turning in to sleep a bit earlier.

While some may dread this time of darkness, if you simply embrace what life has to offer, winter can be just as productive and vital as the other seasons. We just have to shift our focus of what “productivity” means.

With days becoming shorter by the minute, the 21st marks the time of ultimate regeneration. Doing less is actually doing more for your mind, body, and spirit.

Stay warm, yet still get outside. Be still, yet allow for some movement in the day. Socialize with others, yet make time for solitude. Indulge, yet have restraint. This is the season to test your boundaries and balance. ⚖️
