I’ve thought about this so much the last few months. Every time there is warning of a new weather emergency I see so many people who have no idea what to actually do.
Going to the store is not an emergency plan. Having the skills to use what you have, having the skills to purify water, having the skills to heat your home if you need to. So much of this is lost. We should be practicing these skills all year as an every day part of our lives to be prepared for everything. We should not need a warning and an alert to be able to take care of our families.
Everything is so convenient now that it has killed real skills. “I’ll just go buy water.” Okay but what if that wasn’t an option? “I need to go stock up on food.” What if the stores didn’t exist anymore? Then what? “I’m not sure how we’re going to stay warm?” We can lose power at any point, this is something we should be thinking of sooner. Most importantly, all of these conveniences can be taken away.
Want to know what can’t be taken away? Skills and knowledge.
