So we at FirefightersFIRSTnj.com previousely posted some hopfully helpful ways to assist keeping someone with dementia to remain calm
HERE now are 5 KEY THINGS TO AVOID when calming someone with dementia - these actions can easily make agitation worse, even if your intentions are good:
🚫 1. NEVER Argue or Correct Them-
it is ok for you to be frustrated, it is NOT ok for you to show it
(breath & remain calm)
:: Why::
Logic and memory aren’t reliable in dementia, so “correcting or raising your voice” can and will cause them frustration or shame.
::What to do instead::
Agree and/or gently redirect — for example, if they say “I need to go to work,” you can say, “We’ll do that soon. Let’s have some coffee first.”
REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.
🚫 2. Don’t Rush or Touch Suddenly
::Why::
Quick movements or sudden physical contact can feel threatening and make their anxiety spike instantly.
::What to do instead::
Move slowly & cautiousely, keep your hands visible, and approach from the front so they can see you coming- Unfortunately the days of suprise hugging a loved one will not be processed as it used to be.
REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.
🚫 3. Avoid Loud Noises and Overstimulation
::Why::
Any sized Crowds, close personal interaction outside their safe space, lower a loud television as background noise can overwhelm and adgitate someone with dementia.
::What to do instead::
Develop a calm, peaceful, quiet space; add soft lighting, soothing background music, and minimal distractions and/or movment in environment.
REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.
🚫 4. Don’t Take Behavior Personally
::Why::
Agitation or anger is usually fear or confusion, and not directed at you… they are scared or upset at themselves that they don’t underatand whats going on at that moment.
::What to do instead::
Step back if needed, and give them time to settle.
REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.
🚫 5. Avoid Complex Questions or Choices
::Why::
Too many options or long explanations increase anxiety. Pushing or demanding a quick responce is the worat rhing one can do.
::What to do instead::
Be KINDLY direct, speak softly, and offer simple choices or options like, “Do you want tea or water?”, instead of open-ended questions, which somtimes confuses them, as they can’t explain or find the right words.
REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.
