The week of Thanksgiving is an incredible family week! Kids come home from college, siblings come to sit at the table and grandchildren play and laugh in the house, much for families to give Thanks! For some, family has moved away, spouces have passed, and the holiday is more of a curse of what was than what is-
This year for Thanksgiving, please give thanks by checking in on an elderly neighbor, or friend. It may be 5 minutes of your time, but to them 5 minutes is their everything to celebrate.

So we at FirefightersFIRSTnj.com previousely posted some hopfully helpful ways to assist keeping someone with dementia to remain calm

HERE now are 5 KEY THINGS TO AVOID when calming someone with dementia - these actions can easily make agitation worse, even if your intentions are good:

🚫 1. NEVER Argue or Correct Them-
it is ok for you to be frustrated, it is NOT ok for you to show it
(breath & remain calm)
:: Why::
Logic and memory aren’t reliable in dementia, so “correcting or raising your voice” can and will cause them frustration or shame.

::What to do instead::
Agree and/or gently redirect — for example, if they say “I need to go to work,” you can say, “We’ll do that soon. Let’s have some coffee first.”

REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.

🚫 2. Don’t Rush or Touch Suddenly
::Why::
Quick movements or sudden physical contact can feel threatening and make their anxiety spike instantly.

::What to do instead::
Move slowly & cautiousely, keep your hands visible, and approach from the front so they can see you coming- Unfortunately the days of suprise hugging a loved one will not be processed as it used to be.

REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.

🚫 3. Avoid Loud Noises and Overstimulation
::Why::
Any sized Crowds, close personal interaction outside their safe space, lower a loud television as background noise can overwhelm and adgitate someone with dementia.

::What to do instead::
Develop a calm, peaceful, quiet space; add soft lighting, soothing background music, and minimal distractions and/or movment in environment.

REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.

🚫 4. Don’t Take Behavior Personally
::Why::
Agitation or anger is usually fear or confusion, and not directed at you… they are scared or upset at themselves that they don’t underatand whats going on at that moment.
::What to do instead::
Step back if needed, and give them time to settle.

REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.

🚫 5. Avoid Complex Questions or Choices
::Why::
Too many options or long explanations increase anxiety. Pushing or demanding a quick responce is the worat rhing one can do.

::What to do instead::
Be KINDLY direct, speak softly, and offer simple choices or options like, “Do you want tea or water?”, instead of open-ended questions, which somtimes confuses them, as they can’t explain or find the right words.

REMEMBER: STAY CALM, they’re not playing you, unfortunately it’s their new normal.

All at FirefightersFIRSTnj.com hope these ‘ Not to Do’s’ helps & gives you and your loved one some peace in some small way- God Bless

@ FirefightersFIRSTNJ.com we’ve been asked about keeping a loved one suffering from early or current dementia from being easily agitated- So below are Three ways that can help

Three (03) safe & effective ways to calm someone with dementia when they’re anxious, agitated, or upset:

1. Speak Softly & Reassure:
Why it works & how to do it safely
-Always remember tone and body language often matter more than words…
* Approach slowly from the front, never from behind.
* Make eye contact and smile gently.
* Use a calm, low voice — short, simple sentences like “You’re safe” or “I’m here to help.”
* Avoid arguing or correcting; instead, validate their feelings (“I see you’re worried about that. Let’s take care of it together.”)

2. Redirect Their Attention
Why it works:
-Shifting focus can break a cycle of anxiety or confusion.
How to do it safely:
* Offer a comforting activity like folding towels, listening to familiar music, or looking at family photos.
* Ask about something pleasant from their past (“Tell me about your first car” or “Your favorite vacation spot”).
* Move to a quieter space if the environment is overstimulating.

3. Use Gentle, Familiar Comfort
Why it works:
-Familiar sensory experiences reduce stress.
How to do it safely:
* Offer a soft blanket, favorite sweater, or something they like to hold.
* Play soothing music they enjoy (especially songs from their youth).
* Encourage slow breathing together or a light hand massage with lotion only if they’re comfortable being touched.

Hope these 3 ways help, relieve the pressure you and your loved one feel! Also, if you are the primary care giver and need respite care, please let us know how we can help.

Why COMPANIONSHIP & Medicine Reminders are Game Changers:

Retired or injured firefighters who don’t take their prescription medications on schedule can face serious health complications. Skipping, delaying or taking multiple doses of medications when left alone can throw the body out of balance and worsen existing conditions. That’s why having a certified home health aide by your side can make a crucial difference.

Here are 3 key reasons why having a certified home health aide can help. Companionship overseeing & assisting with medication reminders can help prevent illness, discomfort & over medicating;

1. Consistent Medication Management:
A certified home health aide ensures medications are taken exactly as prescribed—on time and at the right dose—reducing the risk of missed or doubled doses that can lead to dangerous side effects or setbacks in recovery.

2. Monitoring for Side Effects & Changes:
Certified aides are alert to changes in behavior, mood, or physical symptoms that could indicate a medication issue. Early detection allows for quicker communication with doctors and prevents minor issues from becoming major problems.

3. Peace of Mind & Improved Quality of Life:
With a trusted aide handling daily health routines, retired and injured firefighters can focus on healing and enjoying life, while the family knows loved one has proper care is in capable hands.

This is where Firefighters FIRST Home Health Care can help.

We understand the unique needs of firefighters and are committed to providing compassionate, reliable care right in their home aka ‘Protecting in Place’, while assisting them living with independence & respect.
