Did you know what you eat can directly affect your cognitive health?
The Ketoflex 12/3 diet is a dietary approach designed to support brain health, particularly for preventing or managing Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline. It was developed by Dr. Dale Bredesen, a neurologist and Alzheimer’s researcher, as part of his “ReCODE” (Reversal of Cognitive Decline) protocol.
Here’s a breakdown of the Ketoflex 12/3 diet:
Keto: This aspect of the diet emphasizes ketosis, a metabolic state in which the body uses fat as its primary fuel source instead of carbohydrates. The diet encourages the consumption of healthy fats (like avocados, nuts, and olive oil), moderate protein (such as fish, poultry, and plant-based proteins), and low carbohydrates, particularly avoiding refined sugars and processed foods.
Flex: The “Flex” part refers to flexibility in food choices, focusing on a variety of nutrient-dense, whole foods. This includes a broad range of vegetables, healthy fats, and some fruits, particularly those low in sugar.
12/3: This component involves time-restricted eating, which includes a 12-hour fasting window each day. For example, if you finish dinner at 7 PM, you would not eat again until 7 AM the next day.
The 3 refers to avoiding food intake at least 3 hours before bedtime. This practice is thought to improve sleep quality and support metabolic processes that occur during sleep.
The Ketoflex 12/3 diet also encourages the consumption of anti-inflammatory and nutrient-rich foods, focusing on supporting overall brain health. Additionally, it recommends avoiding toxins and incorporating lifestyle factors such as regular exercise, stress management, and good sleep hygiene.
