The next blood marker to look at is alkaline phosphatase (ALP). ALP is a zinc-dependent enzyme that can be found throughout the body. When this marker is decreased, we would definitely consider a possible zinc deficiency but there are other health conditions to consider as well. Here are just a few…

When ALP is low (under 85 IU/L), it could indicate:
-Possible zinc or vitamin D deficiency
-Hypothyroidism
-Need for hydrochloric acid/insufficient protein
-Magnesium or vitamin C deficiency

When ALP is elevated (over 117 IU/L), it may indicate:
-Excess vitamin D
-Osteoporosis
-Biliary or pancreatic dysfunction
-Liver dysfunction
-Herpes zoster (shingles)
