Having kids and doing cranial work, I am glad the new research on concussions from sports activities is causing an increase in awareness of its effects. I have recently treated quite a few patients that had lingering restrictions from head trauma during sports, which manifested symptoms as much as ten years latter. Thankful we cleared these restrictions, improving focus concentration and decreasing head pain. Even better is when we are able to treat immediately following the sport activity and prevent the problem all together by stabilizing the proper nutrition to the brain through csf flow. I even think that high head contact sports like soccer, football and hockey benefit from regular treatment during the season. Of course, getting hit with a baseball in the head would benefit from follow up. So thank you researchers for helping us understand the importance of resolving repetitive head trauma.

On Feb. 3, Purdue University released an analysis of concussions among high-school football players by the Purdue Neurotrauma Group. Based on brain scans, the researchers determined that concussions "are likely caused by many hits over time and not from a single blow to the head, as commonly believed."

Maybe the placebo effect is not just "belief" making people better. It just seems that if belief alone was enough to heal then everyone who belied they would get well would. Maybe the un-explainable placebo effect is the alignment of body, mind and spirit on regaining a state of health.

The new catch term is "there is no research to back that up." In addition if you show them research, that doesn't count because of who did or did not publish the findings. What they are really saying is, I don't care what you experienced, because it could have been the placebo effect at work. They say that like the placebo effect is a bad thing. Now, call me crazy, but if we want to heal wouldn't it be better not to discount this natural power but rather try to make it happen more consistently? If we all accept that taking a sugar pill can make you heal because you believed it would, the question should not be how do we use that fact to discount a treatment that worked for someone else, but rather how do we make this placebo effect work more effectively in our lives. How can we use it for our benefit? So, how can taking a sugar pill (that we "believe" will make us better) create the type of alignment of mind body and spirit that results in a placebo healing actual body tissue?

1) The body. We align the body through taking action that our psyche is comfortable in its task. Taking the sugar pill can be that active action. In this life, change requires some physical action. Certainly the action can be going to a body worker, healer or doctor. Taking action makes us an active participant in our healing. Action is not just wishing or believing. The placebo effect shows us that we can actually over ride science by unleashing the power of the body to heal. So much so that modern "studies" create double blinds to compensate for this phenomenon we call a placebo. Think about how such a measure implies that the placebo effect is undeniable and in truth our bodies do have the capacity to heal.

2) We align the mind by having a mental focus on accepting getting better. If the mind is directed this way, simultaneously we are able to release the fear around illness, because we feel safe enough about the treatment to let go of negative or worrisome thoughts, which interfere with the healing process. This is when we say they "believe" it will work. True belief is not wishing or struggling to make something so. It is the releasing or the disengagement of the fear that fights against our desires through negative thoughts or self talk. We can put down our worries because the sugar pill will help us. (this is not a bad thing)

Third we have the alignment of our spirit. Other names for spirit in this context would be soul or consciousness. Aligning our spirt happens through having a clear intention. Having a clear intention is as much about letting go of the things we do not understand as it is about being clear about what we want for ourselves. Intentions and Goals are different. Both require a clear picture in reality of what we want. The difference is a goal is all about the action we will take to get there and how it affects us. Our intention is about how our actions not only have an effect on us, but they effect others as well. Intention is about how our world will respond to our actions and then in turn effect us. In other words, intention is about accepting that help, synchronicity and receiving our desires. Intention is about getting clear that what we want can come in mysterious ways that we cannot foresee. With intention, we still take action but we do it ready to receive in ways that are "out of our hands." Intention is also about accepting the help that may come from unknown sources showing up in our lives. Intention is about letting go and accepting help from opportunities. Where as a goal is about focusing on the actions we can take to reach our target. A goal is about gaining control. An intention is about releasing or sharing control/power. In the case of the placebo, we are accepting our ability to heal in ways and from a source we cannot yet explain. That release of control to the world is what aligns our spit/soul/ consciousness with healing in relation to the placebo.

In other words, the thing that most studies try to take out of the equation for healing, seems to be the main thing we should try to bring into our lives. I believe this is true no matter what the medical or healing intervention. I am just saying, maybe. Because at the end of the day if your life is better and you are supporting the world, that is health.
