This journey began with first turns at Oregon Adaptive Sports and is now heading to the world stage. Two OAS athletes are preparing for Milano Cortina 2026, and we are excited to share more about their journeys as we count down the days with them. Who’s ready to cheer them on?

“Let’s put down the gun, let’s put down the bottle, let’s put down the depression — and let’s go ski.” - OAS Instructor & Army Veteran Lou Bauer.

It is our honor at OAS to facilitate access to the transformative and irreplaceable benefits of outdoor recreation, especially for those who carry both the visible and invisible scars of war.

We are eternally grateful for their service and to the OAS community who helps fund these opportunities.

Heroes Weekend is here!

This weekend, Heroes brings veterans and active-duty service members with disabilities together for a full weekend of skiing, shared experience, and community. For many athletes, it is a chance to spend time on the mountain with other veterans, in a space where connection comes naturally.

In the film "Worth the Ride" (released in November 2025), Dennis Connors shares how skiing alongside other veterans became one place he found that sense of community again. His story is one example of what Heroes Weekend makes possible: time on snow, mutual support, and the kind of belonging that keeps people coming back. (Watch: Worth the Ride at the link in our bio!)

We are grateful for the athletes, volunteers, and partners who show up each year to make Heroes Weekend what it is.

Not every moment on the mountain is about movement; sometimes it’s about pausing together, sharing a laugh, and taking it all in before the next run.

Those in-between moments are part of what makes time spent outside together feel so meaningful.

This is what your Sunday morning with OAS could look like:

Meet at OAS by 9:00 AM to catch a ride up with the community, or head straight to the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center. From there, check in with instructors, get set up with the gear you need, and gather on the groomed trails.

Ski, snowshoe, or use adaptive Nordic equipment to get out on snow. Move at your own pace while volunteers ski alongside, offering support and encouragement as the group heads out together.

Build skills, spend time together, and keep coming back. Community Nordic is about learning, practicing, and being part of it.

Our next Community Nordic session is this Sunday, 9:30 AM–12:00 PM.
No cost for athletes. Instruction and adaptive equipment are provided. Sign up at https://oregonadaptivesports.org/events/community-nordic-sundays-2/

Today wraps up volunteer training at Hoodoo, and it also marks the end of training season for our incredible volunteers.

From fall orientation sessions to winter on-snow days, new and returning volunteers have shown up again and again to build skills, learn adaptive equipment, support athletes and instructors, and care deeply about doing things well.

Training takes time, energy, patience, and heart. We are so grateful to every volunteer who committed to growth, practice, and preparation.

Thank you for showing up, for learning, and for being such an important part of this community. We cannot wait to put all of this training into motion together!
