Learning should look & feel like this.
************************************
School & therapy should be a place where kids feel understood, safe, & loved. Learning should be comprised of meaningful work with lots of fun & discovery woven into the process.
How many hours of ABA does a person need?
*********************************************
Well, it depends. When a person visits the doctor and he/she is prescribed a medication, the person must take it as prescribed for it to work effectively. Every person’s body is different, and the doctor likely assessed many variables prior to prescribing the type of medication & dosage.
It’s the same idea with ABA. Following a thorough evaluation, licensed clinicians should “prescribe” the “dosage” of therapy hours based on the child’s needs, abilities, & the parents’ goals. Therapy should NEVER be a one-size-fits-all, and decisions should never be made based on billable hours. A general rule of thumb is for every hour of therapy a child receives weekly, there is a corresponding target.
(25 hours of therapy/wk = about 25 targets)
🚩Consider it a red flag if a clinician requires 40 hours of therapy a week without clear explanation.
🚩Consider it a red flag if ABA hours conflict with the education of your child. One can’t live without the other. Education tells us WHAT to teach, while ABA tells us HOW to teach most effectively.
🚩 Consider it a red flag if you are not allowed to sit in & participate in sessions.
🚩Consider it a failing program if progress or “good behavior” only occurs inside the four walls of the clinic.
When parents & professionals truly come together in collaboration, ABA becomes a LIFESTYLE for the child & their family. This is where the real magic happens.
So forget the “hours” & focus on learning how to implement these amazing principles across people & settings. You’re sure to see more smiles like this one. ♥️
