Serving countless thousands, we provide accessible, client-centered health services and information For more information, please our website.

Through a monthly lottery process, clients are admitted into our Dental Section of the Berkeley Free Clinic for life. From there, we provide dental exams and check-ups, cleanings, x-ray services, fillings, and extractions. The Dental Section is also constantly looking for professional dentists, registered hygienists and volunteer dental assistant (BFC trained) to help serve our community.

Our Tuesday night shift doing Tuesday shift things! We love seeing our clients smile at the end of the night !! Since they can’t see our smiles we always end with a big Tuembs up 🤩

This week we assisted Dr. B in relieving pain, restoring teeth and making smiles.

Are you interested in serving as a volunteer dental assistant and expanding access to oral healthcare? Berkeley Free Clinic Dental Section is recruiting volunteers for 2021-2022! Applications are now open until September 5 2021 at 11:59 pm.
No experience is needed to volunteer as a dental assistant. We provide a hands-on training program which includes dental assisting basics and patient advocacy integrated into clinical experience. As a trainee, you will have the opportunity to interact with volunteer dentists, hygienists, and clients from Berkeley and the greater East Bay.

As our application cycle comes to an end, here is our final BFCD volunteer spotlight.

Here's what Madusha Perera has to say about his experience:

"BFCD has made me grow so much as an individual and provided me with a safe space to explore diverse communities and meet amazing people at Berkeley. Coming from Sri Lanka, I always knew I wanted to give back to underserved communities while being a strong advocate for good oral care. At BFCD, I have worked with many compassionate dentists who have inspired me with their enthusiasm for free healthcare and shown me what it means to be a true healthcare provider. Assisting dentists and developing close relationships with our patient base has solidified my love for dentistry, and I am immensely grateful for the passionate team of empathetic volunteers that I get to work with to bring positive change in our community!"

One unique thing that Madusha loves about BFCD: "While I am proud of our team that works incredibly hard to provide the best care for our patients, I would say the unparalleled patient interaction is the most unique thing about BFCD. Our patients are all incredibly kind and friendly and are the reason I always look forward to my night shift! They are the treasures that we work so hard to guard, and every second at the clinic will leave you with memories that you will cherish forever!"

Here is TAYLOR NGUYEN--Taylor has been volunteering at BFCD for a year now. She's majoring in Nutritional Sciences- Physiology & Metabolism with an intended minor in Toxicology. She will be a junior this upcoming school year.

"As a volunteer of BFCD, I was able to find a career path in healthcare that I can truly see myself in. Volunteering here has opened up many opportunities for me in dentistry and I can't wait to continue! I have hopes to one day give back to BFCD for all of the experiences they have given me. I'm thankful for the memories and community I've gained here and I can't wait to see our section grow!"

Down to just 9 weeks until the application closes! This week we will be spotlighting our wonderful volunteer Byron Zhao. Feel free to reach out to learn more about his experiences at BFC!

Byron has been volunteering with the BFCD for a year now. He majors in Molecular Cell Biology, Biological Chemistry and will be a senior in the upcoming academic year.

Here's what he has to say about his experience:
“Volunteering at the BFCD has given me the experience of what it's like to work as a health care professional. The BFCD taught me not only the skills to be a dental assistant, but also helped me to confirm my vision on working to become a future health care provider. Considering the working experience working as a dental assistance in private practices, BFCD is very special since it serves very different patient population who are the most venerable in our community. It is not just a place for me to learn, but a place that provide me the opportunity for me to give back to the Berkeley community.”

Fun Fact: I am an armature fashion photographer and I am a percussionist of two different orchestras.

Here’s Kevin Nguyen-
Kevin has been volunteering with the BFCD for almost a year now. He is currently applying to dental school and is particularly interested in working with pediatric patients.
Kevin says volunteering at the BFCD has been one of the most meaningful experiences in his life and has helped reaffirm the reasons why he is so passionate about dentistry. Having worked as a pediatric dental assistant prior to volunteering at BFC, Kevin has seen how patience and compassion could determine the outcome of an apprehensive child’s behavior. Kevin loves how the BFC providers and volunteers treat our patients with the same level of patient advocacy.
