Sometimes we need to pause, step back and look more closely at our work. As artists, we do it all the time with our work… multiple times mid-process. We step back to figure out where we’re at and where we’re going. Sculptors, painters, performers and writers. I will stand back, turn the canvas, go for a walk or eat a snack.
I play the pause. I check in. I feel, I measure, I peer, I gauge, I leave it for another day. And I have reached the same place with yoga.
I need a pause.
This is what we teach as yogis,
And I practice what I preach.

I pull back my energy and I recenter. I will try new things, I will create new practices, and I will come out with clarity and strength.

You may not see me on the schedule but I am here if my tribe needs me, just as I’ve always been.

Today I completed a painting that I started just before the world shut down. I remember starting the underpainting and setting it aside with a “Meh.” My original vision, what I saw so clearly in my minds eye- kept changing. It didn’t feel like it was growing; it just felt like it was shifting. And I needed it to come to stillness so I could be sure what needed to come through. 2021 was laden with stillness. I had finished “Healer” which was a huge oil painting I did in quarantine (my largest to date and the largest I will probably ever do) I painted my way through rolling panic attacks, fear, anxiety, and depression. It was excruciating and exhausting- the painting may be beautiful, but it’s certainly not “pretty.” I forced myself outside my comfort zone all the way through 2021 into 2022, with zero desire to pick up the canvas. It felt dead and gone; I wasn’t sure if the vision would come back. Until one morning during a drizzle, I stepped out the front door.
A morning glory grew from the lawn. A seed got kicked around or raked up, finding just the right conditions in order to bloom… and there it was, like a gift just for my eyes. I held it, studied it, fell into it and realized that was it. It joined my empty hands on the canvas shortly after.
The hands of an artist, weaving the ethereal into the mundane. And just like the morning glory seed, the artist had found just the right conditions to bring her painting to life.

Being on the other side of this painting is even more beautiful than I could have imagined. I sit in satisfaction and contentment; all is well with my soul.
