Today is World Spine Dayâa gentle nudge to give the central pillar of your body the care and attention it deserves.
Weâre sharing a few tips to help you take better care of your spine and keep it functioning well as you age:
- Maintain Good Posture: Whether sitting, standing, or sleeping, maintaining good posture helps keep your spine in alignment and reduces strain on your discs.
When sitting, keep your feet flat on the floor and avoid slouching. Use supportive pillows or chairs to maintain the natural curves of your spine.
- Stay Active: Stretching and strengthening exercises, such as side plank and abdominal crunches, can help improve your spineâs range of motion and flexibility. Experts recommend doing these exercises at least twice a week, 60 seconds per exercise.
- Lift Objects Safely: When lifting heavy objects, use your legs instead of your back. Bend your knees, keep the object close to your body, and avoid twisting to reduce the risk of back strain.
- Prioritize Ergonomics: Set up your workstation to support your spine. Ensure that your computer screen is at eye level; your chair provides lumbar support; and you take regular breaks to stretch and move throughout the day.
- Donât Ignore Back Pain: While not all cases of back pain warrant medical attention, you should consider visiting a spine specialist if yours hasnât improved after a week of home treatment; if it is severe or worsening; or if it is accompanied by swelling, stiffness, loss of sensation in the legs, loss of bladder function, or difficulty walking.
