How do you deal with stress? First, let’s clarify what we’re talking about here, because there are two forms, Acute and Chronic. Acute Stress, typically short lived, could be anything from watching a scary movie or the thrill of a roller coaster, to extreme situations where you are fearing for your life. Chronic Stress, which is prolonged and constant, being the kind that most people suffer from in modern day, could be the jerk-of-a-boss at the office, the daily rush hour commute, constant financial strain, or carrying around excess weight and not knowing how to get healthier. It’s slow, steady, and unrelenting, and can build gradually over time. This is the kind that we’re talking about today. Its gradual nature makes it easy to ignore, or at least initially soothe, using various techniques, from that evening beer or whiskey, to bouts of exercise, to sauna or mediation. These can all be wonderful methods of stress reduction long term, and great to have at your disposal, BUT push yourself to dig deeper and find out what the real root of your chronic stress might be.

If that hectic, traffic-filled morning commute is the cause of so much chronic stress, and finding a new job isn’t in the cards, reframe that time as an opportunity to listen to a podcast or an audio book, or even catch up with an old friend who might also be commuting. So instead of arriving home completely stressed out from battling traffic for an hour, and needing that glass of wine or 3 miles on the treadmill to wind down, you arrive home thankful for that much-deserved “You” time.
